Noob is to be the millionth English word according to the Global Language Monitor. That is, if the new word can overcome a few other words that also may become the millionth, such as the word “defriend”.

But how cool would it be for “noob” to get the honors!

According to MSN, the Global Language Monitor will officially introduce the millionth word in the English language on June 10th, 2009 at 10:22am, British Summer Time.

In order for a word to BECOME a new word it must be uttered over 25,000 times in the media. Although social networking sites and other social outlets also also count.

Shouldn’t it be spelled, “newb”? It’s short for “newbie”, not “noobie”.

Fred you’re right in that Noob redirects to Newbie in online dictionary. I guess that’s why they wanted it added separately.

    Newbie? [Noo-bee, nyoo?]
    –noun
A newcomer or novice, esp. an inexperienced user of the Internet or of computers in general.
