Duke Nukem developer 3D Realms closes doors Forever. Release of DFN may never come

Duke Nukem Forever is Never. Now go play Duke Nukem 3D and cry!
Duke Nukem Forever is canceled officially as developer 3D Realms has closed its doors and let go of all its employees, according to multiple sources throughout the industry. This was confirmed by the webmaster of 3D Realms Joe Siegler, who said the companies closure was not a marketing ploy but he didn’t have any further comment.

Duke Nukem Forever 3D Realms Development Team Goodbye picture Update: The official 3D Realms web-site has essentially confirmed its closure via a post entitled “Goodbye” from Joe Siegler which contains a picture of the team (click it to the right to see the full pic) and these final words: “Thanks for being fans and for all your support.” No explanation of how the end came about was given. But it is definite confirmation of the end of 3dR.

News of the closure was first reported by Shacknews and followed up by Gamasutra who had obtained separate confirmation. Gamasutra was told that the studio would be officially shut down by the end of this week.

I know the question on everyone’s mind is, “Will the game ever still be released”? Most people are hoping that someone else could pick it up and either publish it as is or finish the project. Which is officially in the record books as the game with the longest development cycle (12 years) with development having started in 1997.

Well Take Two still holds the rights to publish Duke Nukem Forever and has stated that their deal did not include providing the funding for it’s continued and drawn out development cycle. This means that if the game is to be published, it would have to be done by Take Two, unless they turn over the rights of the game to another company. Which may happen, because apparently Duke Nukem Forever was 90% complete back in April of this year. That is, of course, if producer George Broussard is even to be believed.

As is, the future of Duke Nukem Forever is truly unknown. It may have indeed lived up to its namesake. And yes, now you can attach whatever funny names you want and they’ll be accurate. Including such classics as “DNF – Did Not Finish” or “DUKE NUKEM FOR-NEVER”.

We’ll keep everyone updated on the status of the game which sadly Supa had been dying to play since its announcement. 🙁

Here is a trailer for Duke Nukem Forever. Take a glimpse at what you’ll probably never play.
