Why Sony wants you to share your PS3 games with others

Sony's Jack Tretton speaking about PS3

Sony has an interesting Digital Rights Management (DRM) system which allows you to share any purchased PlayStation 3 game with up to five other PS3 users. Even if your system fails, you can move all your content to a new console or simply give all the stuff you brought over to a friend with no penalty.

This may seem crazy to a regular Joe that a console manufacturer would actually condone sharing your games with a friend. Particularly in the light of say the music industry, which doesn’t even want you sharing burned CDs with friends (though it does depend on the band).

However Sony Computer Entertainment America’s President Jack Tretton explains why they support sharing your games with your friends and family:

You can send that content to four other friends for that initial investment,” said Tretton. “We want to get the game in as many hands as possible. It’s not about generating profits at each and every interaction with the consumer. I think that really offsets the argument that says, ‘Wow, that’s a really pricey system.’”

However, Sony does have the right to turn this feature off at any time. However I give them definite kudos for allowing it out of the box.
