Activision has announced Space Camp for release on Wii and DS this June. The game will allow players who can’t join the actual Space Camp program a chance at having fun with space in their own home.

Space Camp has players taking control of an astronaut in training who gets stranded in space during a mission to the Moon. In order to make it back home, players will need to complete “a series of futuristic, furiously fun missions” and various mini-games.

The missions include everything from scientific experiments to interstellar space navigation, to alien invasions. Players will even receive aid from their very own personal robot.

Each version will also make use of the system’s specific capabilities for unique control schemes.

In addition the Wii version will also boast a variety of multiplayer options including two-player co-op (offline) and a four-player party mode. In co-op one player takes control of the main character while another can effect the environment, kind of like in Super Mario Galaxy’s co-op mode. In Party Mode groups of two players compete in a variety of mini-games set on both Earth and the Moon.

David Oxford from Activision Publishing said that “What could be more fun than playing as an astronaut in a videogame? This scenario offers a new perspective on using Wii and DS controls to craft a truly fresh, family friendly gameplay experience.”

The real Space Camp (Actually called the United States Space & Rocket Center) was created by the Alabama State Legislature. Currently there are more than 1,500 artifacts located there telling the story of man’s quest to conquer space. There are two educational camps housed in the center, one of them bearing the name of Space Camp. It can claim a 27-year-long history and more than 530,000 people have gone through courses there.
