Capcom has announced that Bionic Commando has a release date of May 19th, 2009 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. A PC version will be coming “shortly after” the console versions.

Bionic Commando for current-gen consoles is a complete reinvention of the 20 year-old NES classic and builds on the brand that was brought back to prominence with the Bionic Commando: Rearmed Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network update of recent times.

This new game however is a 3D third-person action title in which players control Nathan Spencer, a genetically enhanced supersoldier, who finds himself falsely imprisoned but is released to save the world after a bio-terrorist attack threatens his city of Ascension. Players can use Spencer’s unique and signature deployable arm to swing from the environment, attack enemies, pick up and throw objects and much more in some great looking combat and thrilling acrobatics.

Here is the official description of the game:

Pre-Order Bionic Command on Xbox 360One of Capcom’s all-time great franchises returns with this re-envisioned modern version of Bionic Commando. Continuing the story 10 years later (with slight modifications to character names in the re-envisioned story), gamers are once again playing the role of Nathan Spencer (aka “Rad” Spencer), a highly decorated government operative that distinguished himself in battle against a group known as the Imperials. However, Spencer finds himself betrayed by his commander known as Super Joe (who Commando fans should easily recognize). With his bionic arm removed and Spencer imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit, the warrior is sentenced to death. However, on the day that he’s going to be executed, an experimental weapon is detonated in Ascension City by a terrorist group called Bio-Rain. With the city in ruins and the terrorists in control of tons of weapons, Joe has no choice but to offer Spencer a deal: if he will take on and defeat the terrorists, Joe will clear his name. Gaining a new bionic arm, Spencer leaps into action.

Key Features of Bionic Commando include:

* Bionic Commando brings the original 8-bit game into an era of high definition graphics
* Explore the beautiful, free-roaming 3D world of Ascension City
* Bionic arm allows players to swing, grapple, and attack enemies
* Multiplayer options allow up to 10 simultaneous players
* Nathan Spencer voiced by Mike Patton
