Tribes 1 running in your browser via InstantAction

InstantAction has announced that they have purchased the entire Starsiege Universe from Activision/Vivendi and have already got Tribes 1 up and running on their browser-based service.

InstantAction’s goal is to have as many videogames as possible, both classic and new, playable via any browser using their service, and this is a major step in that direction.

Tribes was one of the most popular first-person shooters back in the day and had many original elements including jetpacks, 32+ player support, 128 players max, troop transport vehicles, several different player classes and huge, sprawling environments.

The version that InstantAction has up and running is the same exact version that PC gamers know and love, they have not touched it graphically.

They did do a number of behind-the-scenes updates though, here is a list from the InstantAction blog:

* GarageGames purchased the ownership of the Tribes IP (all Tribes games) from Activision/Vivendi late last year.
* We do have the source code to the game, and the build has been updated with bug fixes
* The build will be distributed through the website, but still playable as a standalone game.
* The game will use the existing Master Server system that the original game used. We will provide a new master server address with this release.
* The game is not compatible with version 1.11 but you should be able to play the same demos as recorded on previous versions
* Mods and configs used in 1.11 will not be directly compatible, without at least minor changes, as the base game scripts have been cleaned up considerably by Andrew
* The game does NOT have updated graphics, this was a PR misunderstanding. The game does support modern file formats (PNG textures, Zip files)
