Video Game Museum opened in Rochester, New York

Staff at the Center for the History of Electronic Games Want to go to a video game museum? Then you should head to Rochester, New York.

There you will find the newly opened National Center For the History of Electronic Games at the Strong National Museum of Play.

On display is a massive collection of over 15,000 videogame-related items.
Which is one of the largest collections in the United States. Each of the included items is connected to the “history of electronic gaming” in one form or another.

Amongst the collection are over 10,000 specific videogame units and every single gaming console since the Magnavox Odyssey, which is largely recognized as the first home videogame system.

In addition to the videogaming history showcase, you will also find preserved related material including marketing documents, connected literary works (read: books) as well as development and publishing papers. I assume that the box and instructions for every videogame are also amongst the preserved materials.

The entire collection will be available on-site for perusal by researchers, while much of it will also be open for viewing ( but only in some cases for playing) by museum attendees.

Currently, the Center is developing a major, long-term, interactive exhibit tentatively titled The Revolutionary World of Electronic Play. Projected to cover 15,000 square feet and to open in 2012, the exhibit will be informed in part by “Concentric Circles: A Lens for Exploring the History of Electronic Games,” an interpretive framework developed by Center scholars. A traveling version of the exhibit is also envisioned.
