Final Fantasy XI-2 MMO sequel still in development at Square Enix
Square Enix is still hard at work on Final Fantasy XI-2 or rather the follow-up to Final Fantasy XI as stated to investors at a meeting last month. Although there was no inkling about when we will see this new game.
Square Enix President Yoichi Wada reasserted that work on a new MMO was still underway and said that during the “transition period” between titles “the question is where do we go from here, and we are currently developing a post-FFXI flagship title.”
News on the title has been as sparse as can be but it has been publicly known for a while now that Square Enix was and is developing their next MMO. Although it’s still not known whether the new game will maintain the Final Fantasy name, something that FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated way back in 2007.
Last year 1UP spoke to the development team behind Final Fantasy XI who told them a bit of info on the new MMO, first stating that the game will be different than FFXI.
“The next-generation MMO that we’ll be working on is going to be different than Final Fantasy XI,” Tanaka said. “And even though we have the same staff working on the project, and we have seen the good things from XI, and we’ve also seen the things that the players maybe didn’t like as much…while we’re going to be using that info while we make the next MMO, we’re not going to make something that’ll be exactly like FFXI.”
It is likely that we will not see this new MMO until Square Enix is assured that FFXI will not be growing and are ready to fade it into the background as they introduce their newest baby. Until then though, FFXI looks like it has and will continue to go strong.
