Final Fantasy Dissidia 2 not happening, says Tetsuya Nomura, unless a lot of fans ask for it

Final Fantasy Dissidia Japanese boxartFinal Fantasy Dissidia hasn’t even been released anywhere outside of Japan, where it sold over 801,000 copies on PSP within one month, yet a sequel to the action-RPG was already considered but put aside according to Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura.

At the end of an interview in the 704-page Japanese Dissidia Ultimania strategy guide, Mr. Nomura said: “There are no current plans for a sequel. To be honest, I wanted to do one up until a few months ago. I even called [Mitsunori] Takahashi, the planning director, and [Ryuji] Ikeda, the lead programmer, to talk about sequel concepts — I told them to do what they had to do, but also prepare themselves [to make a sequel]. However, circumstances inside the company wiped that idea out… to actually make [a sequel] happen would be very difficult given the situation.”

It’s suggested that these “circumstances” are simply Square Enix Production Team 1 being in a rush finish Final Fantasy XIII. 1UP further translates that Mr. Nomura does close off the interview by saying that a sequel isn’t entirely out of the question: “If a lot of fans ask for a Dissidia II, circumstances might change. I’d like to think about the matter again if that happens.”

Considering a hidden ending hints at a sequel, let’s hope a second Dissidia might go in development in the future. Although that’ll be hard to say for the English-speaking audience, since the U.S. release isn’t until mid-2009. Still, what do you say, should Dissidia be a series?

Update:
A sequel has been announced! It is called “Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy Duodecim” or something similar (no one exactly sure how to align the words, just like with the first game, where some call it “Dissidia: FF” and others call it “Final Fantasy: Dissidia”.

The new game gives fans more of what they loved in the first title!
