In this downturn in the economic climate, job cuts and consolidations are needed for companies to stay healthy, Disney Interactive Studios not excluded. As a result layoffs have already hit the Disney-owned Turok developer Propaganda Games. What effect does that have on games currently under development at the studio? It turns out a new next-gen Turok 2 — known to fans as Turok 6 — has been canceled before Disney even had the chance to announced the FPS game. Like the classic Turok games, it would’ve had playable dinosaurs in multiplayer too.

To put it in Turok’s own words: “I AM TU…CANCELED!”

Inside sources with Kotaku told them that: “Vancouver based Propaganda Games is in the process of laying off approximately 70 employees. That reduction in workforce is likely closely tied to the cancellation of Turok 2, a title never officially announced by Disney, but one of two projects that Propaganda was working on, we’re told. Propaganda’s second project, which sources opted not to define, is still actively in development.

According to one employee at a DIS subsidiary, the parent company is also planning to consolidate a handful of its studios, including Avalanche Software and the Fall Line studio. Both [Salt Lake City, Utah-based] development houses are responsible for creating games based on Disney properties such as Chicken Little, Hannah Montana and The Chronicles of Narnia.”

This is rather surprising news, considering the well-received new Turok game has shipped 1 million copies on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 alone (the PC version followed later in 2008).
