Avalanche, the makers of the open-world Just Cause series, have announced an all-new open-world fantasy game called AionGuard.

Revealed in Edge Magazine, AionGuard is a war game on an epic scale in which armies made up of thousands of soldiers and flying dragons rain death down upon the world below. Descending from the skies beasts the size of houses smash through the invading armies.

Aionguard has been in development for two years and follows the powerful AionGuard forces. They are an elite fighting force who have merged with a symbiotic armor that allows them to use “awesome magical powers”. The developer has described the game as a mix between “World War I dogfighting pilots, Samurai and medieval knights.”

The storyline deals with how the AionGuard are out to recapture the world after they civilization is almost entirely wiped out. To accomplish their mission they invade and capture various beasts such as dragons and wizard warriors from the occupied Nazurbaal region who are harvesting the world of it’s magical energy source.

The goal of the game is to recapture the enemies strongholds in the region which you will accomplish by leading a thousand-man army that will react to your success or defeat on the battlefield.

Since AionGuard is an open world game though there will be more strategy than in most typical war games due to the fact that players can explore the world in any way they see fit and can cripple their supply lines or capture “geo nodes”, the source of the enemy strongholds power, to make defeating them easier.

Players will even have to befriend the local tribes for help and reinforcements, which will also help them gain more air units to attack a flying fortress. The missions in the game, to quote the developer, will have players going up against the “finest set-pieces videogaming has to offer.”
