2009 game industry sales to grow this year over last even amidst recession, say analysts
2009 will be an even bigger year than 2008 according gaming industry analysts who say that sales growth for this year is expected to be greater than last even amidst the global economic downturn and the U.S. recession. However that growth won’t be as substantial as 2008 which saw the video games industry post gains of nearly 19%. Instead we are likely to see growth in the single digits. Something that is very significant given the state of the economy and further proof that the gaming industry may in fact be “recession proof”.
The growth however is tied more to the console generational hardware cycle than to the state of the economy. It also didn’t hurt that 2008 may have been arguably the biggest year for triple A quality titles ever. Because 2008 saw the release of games like Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, Wii Fit, Grand Theft Auto 4, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero 4: World Tour, Fallout 3 and much more, it will make 2008 even hard to top by big margins.
But they do expect that 2009 will top it, helped a lot by some big titles that are scheduled to appear early in the year like Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV. But the single digit growth will be due in a large part to fewer bigger titles than last year.
