X-Men Origins: Wolverine lets you rip enemies in half

The upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine game will allow players to rip enemies in half as Marvel’s famous Canadian mutant, Wolverine.

This is a striking difference from previous games that allowed you to play as Wolverine which always put limits on the character to the point where it almost seemed that his claws were useless or an afterthought. As the game’s developer Raven Dan Vondrak says, “I’ve read reviews of Wolverine games, I’ve played previous X-Men games, and you just hate it when you’re like, ‘This isn’t what it’s supposed to be like to fight this guy. I’m Wolverine. How come I can’t ever just grab a guy and rip him in half?”

To that end, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which is based on the upcoming movie of the same name that’s due on May 1st, 2009) players will finally be able to do all the things they always wished they could do as Wolverine in a video game, including hack of the limbs of enemies, slice them in half, and decapitate foes. All things you’d expect from an incredibly strong mutant with an adamantium skeleton and six sharp claws on his hands.

The game will even feature a fluid combat system that resembles that of Ninja Gaiden, but less focused on memorizing combos and more based on simply fluid motion. And FAST motion at that.

“People are going to play Wolverine and then be annoyed with how slow other action games are,” says Vondrak. “We’ve gone back and played highly touted action games we all love, and you’re in these attacks forever. And it’s not just the speed — it’s the ease in which you’re able to [break] out of your attacks at any time.”

Personally I can’t wait to play this game. It’s about time that developers do the character justice and shy away from trying to shoehorn a “family friendly” feel into everyone’s favorite mutant badass, which is simply so far away from what Wolverine is supposed to be that it has destroyed any semblance of actually feeling like you are playing Wolverine in previous games.

Let’s hope that this game is a success. I’m sure it will be. Along with the movie, which looks AMAZING. If you haven’t seen it already, then check out this trailer for the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film.
