Expect to add Nintendo TV or Wiinoma to your Wii Channels soon

Nintendo will be launching its own Wii TV service soon called “Wiinoma”, which will be a literal Nintendo television channel available directly from your Wii.

Naturally given Nintendo’s base audience, the content you will see on the Wiinoma Channel will include a deluge of cartoons, “brain training” quizzes, cookery, educational and lifestyle shows. All of the content will be produced exclusively for Nintendo and will aim at the family market (natch).

The service will start broadcasting in Japan this Spring and Nintendo is considering having the Wiinoma Channel in the homes of over 40 million people in the rest of the world by the end of 2009.

The Wiinoma Channel will basically amount to a video on demand service although it’s expected that most of the content on the channel will be free and supported by advertising, although it would be foolish for Nintendo to not take advantage of their Wii Points system to offer paid content as an additional way to make money.

I’ll be interested to see what quality the content is and if it will be better than what is offered on the Nintendo Channel and whether not it will be all Asian-style programming or if it will be more tailored to Western audiences outside of Japan.

You may recall that we reported last month on Nintendo starting a Wii video streaming service in 2009.
