LittleBigPlanet sells 1.3 million. PSN matches XBL with 17 million accounts

LittleBigPlanet exclusively on PS3At the Computer Electronics Show 2009 (CES) Sony head hancho Kaz Hirai marked the occasion with some pretty surprising figures for the PlayStation Network and PlayStation 3 in general.

Sony announced that Media Molecules “Play. Create. Share.” user-generated content meta-platformer LittleBigPlanet has sold over 1.3 million copies worldwide. I’m glad to see that the game has been a success. Hopefully the sales figures will keep coming as word-of-mouth on the awesome game spreads. They also revealed that over 300,000 user-created levels have been made for the game, which has racked up “over two years worth of play-time”, which amounts to gamers spending roughly 17,000 hours with the title.

As far as the PlayStation Network is concerned, Sony says that they have tied Xbox Live with 17 million active accounts for the service
, which is free for gamers who want to play online while the Xbox 360 uses a subscription-based model. 2.1 million PlayStation Network users created their accounts in the month of December 2008.

Finally, Kaz mentioned that over 330 million pieces of downloadable content have been purchased from the PlayStation Store via the PS3’s PlayStation Network.
