Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Wallpaper

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series put skating games on the map when the first title in the franchise hit the PS1 in 1999 and the Nintendo 64 2000. It was so popular that it jump-started the “extreme” sports genre which had never really morphed into its own sub-genre until then, and it arguably made Tony Hawk into a household name and skateboarding into a cool and popular thing to do, where every kid on the street knew the name of the pro tricks.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground on Xbox 360However in recent years the series has been done so many times that it has gotten somewhat stagnant, even if Activision has always tried to push the envelope and improve the series year after year. To make things worse, EA jumped in with some stiff competition when they released a new title called Skate which focused on realism. Not only was the game critically acclaimed, but it also sold very well.

So what does Activision do now? How about create the most realistic skateboarding game ever?

Well if the Hawk man himself is anything to go by, then realism is where the next series is headed.

Speaking to CNET News, Tony Hawk was asked,

“With video games, does it ever reach a point where the technology is at such a high level of realism that there’s nowhere else you can go with it? Do you see that happening with skateboarding games?”

And he replied,

“For sure, with our next release. I can guarantee you that it’s as close to real skating as you’ll ever come.”

So is this the direction you want to see the series go in? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see to find out if The Hawk’s claims are true.
