Crackdown 2 rumors are STRONG. Get it?

Rumors on Crackdown 2 have been swirling around the Internet ever since Microsoft made a comment about it on the Major Nelson podcast.

In the podcast Phil Specer (head of Microsoft Game Studios) remarked that Crackdown was one of his favorite Xbox 360 games after Larry Hryb said, “I’m here to tell you on behalf of the community, I want – we need – another Crackdown. That’s all I’m going to say, so you don’t have to confirm for deny anything. I’m just saying we want it.”

Crackdown 1 for Xbox 360Following this, speculation on Crackdown 2 re-emerged after core members of the original developer of Crackdown, Realtime Worlds, left to form a new studio, Ruffian Games, based in Scottland. They are already hard at work on a game of their own un-related to Crackdown which is a crime-fighting Massively Multiplayer Online game entitled APB.

Speculation abounds though that they were formed by Microsoft specifically to create Crackdown 2.

Flying in the face of that though is a recent statement by Realtime Worlds boss Colin MacDonald who says that they (not Ruffian Games) are still in ongoing discussions about creating Crackdown 2, and that if Microsoft choose Ruffian over them, it would “harm an otherwise fruitful existing development relationship by gambling on funding Crackdown 2 with a startup [meaning Ruffian Games]). Them be fighting words.

Either way, I think it’s safe to say that we will see another Crackdown at some point. It’s not a matter of if, but when.
