Remember Seaman? It was a strange Dreamcast “life-sim” virtual-pet thingamabob in which you raised a man-fish from baby to adult by taking care of and feeding it as well as . . . talking to it, using the included microphone. The game was a moderate success back in the day, and the game’s famed developer, Yoot Saito (who also made Odama for GameCube and The Tower/Sim Tower 2 for PC), even created a PS2 sequel called Seaman 2 (which had a much less disgusting looking Caveman instead of a man-fish), although it never saw release in the United States.
Now Joystiq is reporting via Yoot Saito’s blog that a Seaman 2 spin-off may be coming to the U.S. after all . . . for the iPhone!
Here is the a translation of the text courtesy of 1-Up: The blog seems to imply that Gabo — a stripped down version of the caveman portions of Seaman 2 — will be releasing on Japanese iPhones in the coming weeks, with worldwide distribution set to follow soon after. The application will apparently cost around 450 yen (roughly $4.75), and will sadly lack the voice recognition gameplay that made the original Seaman so engaging in the first place. Still, the iPhone’s swanky touch screen should provide a perfect interface for interacting with the virtual Neanderthal, allowing for a full range of strokes, pokes, and punishing slaps to the face.
Here is a look at the iPhone version of Seaman 2.
I wonder why they didnt do anything for the DS. And honestly? no Voice recognition? on a PHONE? hmm… I dont think this will turn out to be something as good as the previous ones.
Maybe people will compare it to spore or something.
