Supreme Commander for PCSupreme Commander 2 by . . . Square Enix?

In the most unlikely of developments, Square Enix announced that they will be partnering with Gas Powered Games on the sequel to their hit RTS, Supreme Commander, with Supreme Commander 2. This follows on the heels of Square Enix’s President, Yoichi Wada, who discussed the waning influence of Japanese game makers at last month’s Tokyo Game Show 2008. Where he talked about the how much ground Japan had lost to the United States and Europe.

But as they say, if you can’t beat them, join them. Square didn’t discuss what role they will be playing in the development of Supreme Commander 2, nor did they release any real details on the game, including platforms, release window or gameplay features.

Naturally, they did say that this collaboration is aimed at consumers in Europe and North America and that it’s a step towards their goal of boosting development for Western audiences. And this will most likely not be the last Western-developer partnership Square Enix embarks on, as they described their partnering with Gas Powered Games on Supreme Commander 2 as a new cornerstone in their Western strategy.
