PlayStation Network reaches 14 million active accounts to tie with Xbox Live

Sony has announced that it’s free online network, the PlayStation Network has reached 14 million active accounts. This would tie it with Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which reached 14 million subscribers last month.
This is a big deal for Sony’s big black box, which had struggled during it’s first two years against the extremely successful Nintendo Wii and against Microsoft Xbox 360 console, which got a head start into the market place.
But now things really seem to be turning around, despite the fact that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 during the month of October 2008.
“The PlayStation Network has truly hit its stride with unique downloadable games and a video delivery service featuring movies, TV shows, and original programming that you can watch in HD with your PS3,” Koller boasted. “And with 14 million active accounts and 273 million pieces of content downloaded, we know that you’re thirsting for this digital entertainment.”
Also of interesting note is the fact that the PS3 has hit 17-million units sold worldwide last month, which is roughly 5 million behind the Xbox 360′s lifetime-to-date sales numbers.
In other news, PlayStation Home was mentioned and Koller said that the oft-delayed service’s beta will occur “during the next 12 months”, however a specific date for when the avatar-based virtual world would go online, was still not revealed.
