It was revealed at E3 2008 that downloadable content (DLC) for Fallout 3 is exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, and will not appear in the PS3 version… until late September 2009.

Analyst Colin Sebastian with Lazard Capital Markets told Edge Online that Microsoft and Bethesda likely came to some sort of financial agreement to leave PS3 DLC out of the equation as a timed exclusivity.

“…I think it’s a very good possibility that Microsoft and Bethesda were partners in this decision. Obviously Microsoft paid up to secure exclusive online content for Grand Theft Auto IV, and online is a cornerstone for Microsoft’s digital media strategy.”

Fallout 3 for Xbox 360 has exclusive DLCOfficially Bethesda had this to say in an e-mail to Edge Online, “We aren’t going to get into the details of the hows and whys. DLC will be exclusive for PC and 360. We’re not going to give any other qualifiers or clarifications as it relates to other platforms.”

The DLC will reportedly be several hours long and will include an entirely new quest line!

“We want stuff that’s going to be several hours. Not just like a one-off thing, but something like where you can download it and play it for X number of hours,” Hines told ShackNews. “It’ll be similar to what we did with Knights of the Nine in Oblivion, where it’s like whole new quest lines, new stuff, that kind of thing. We want to do stuff like that, where it’s adding hours of tangible stuff to the experience. And it plugs into your existing game, so whether you’re starting a new game, or you’re playing for 40 hours, you can go off and play this,” said Hines.

Work on the DLC for the game is well under way at this point, “We stopped doing content a pretty good way before we finished the game in terms of adding new stuff. So we already have folks starting to look into what [the DLC] might be,” added Hines.

UPDATE November 25th 2008: The three downloadable content packs will be released on Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live in January 2009, with more due in February and March. They will add new quests, items and content. Here are the details on the three DLC packs:

1. Operation Anchorage: Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release on January 27. — All-in-all you get 4 to 5 hours of gameplay for a price of 800 Microsoft Points (that’s US$10 / €9.60 / £6.80 / CAN$12.40 / AU$13.20).

2. The Pitt: Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. The Pitt consists of a large dungeon area, an abandoned steel yard, as well as a settlement divided into two halves; Downtown, occupied by slaves, and Haven occupied by their masters. For the first time players will be able to interact with Raiders other than by fighting them, and one major quest has you taking on the role of a slave, investigating rumors that the Raider boss has found a cure for mutation. It won’t be as combat-heavy as Anchorage. Scheduled for release on March 24. — It’s also priced at 800 Microsoft Points.

3. Broken Steel: Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. This pack will raise the player’s level cap to 30! It starts about two weeks after the events of Fallout 3′s main quest, opening up in the Capital Wasteland by Project Purity, which is now up and running. The new area has lots of new enemies, including a super mutant overlord, a feral ghoul reaver and an Enclave hellfire trooper; new weapons, like the Tesla Canon (which you have to help build) and a projectile flame thrower; new achievements and even new perks like Puppies, which reincarnates a dead Dogmeat automatically as a puppy. It will take 4-6 hours to complete. Scheduled for release on May 5. — It’s also priced at 800 Microsoft Points.

4. Point Lookout: Explore a massive new swampland area filled with new quests and content. Point Lookout will be available in late June for Xbox 360 and PC. It will be available through Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live and through token cards available at retail. Point Lookout will be available on PS3 after the first three DLCs will have finally been released on PS3 during September 2009. — Cost will be 800 Microsoft points or $9.99.

5. Mothership Zeta: The aliens have returned, and they’re pissed. Experience an alien abduction first hand and find out if you’re tough enough to survive. Mothership Zeta is scheduled for release in late July for Xbox 360 and PC. It will be available through Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live and through token cards available at retail. Mothership Zeta will be available on PS3 after Point Lookout. Scheduled for release on August 3. — Cost will be 800 Microsoft points or $9.99.

Don’t bring in the console wars to this. Both systems have strengths and weaknesses, and neither one is better or worse than the other. Its a personal opinion, so for the noob who is calling others noobs…go back to nooblet land.

What I find disturbing though is that the downloadable content seems to shadow the fact that’s all Microsoft does. Its not unfair, well…it is, but, its called competition and a Free Market cannot exist without competition. Sony, unfortunately, doesn’t want to fight for it’s fan base by getting downloadable content.

Microsoft is obviously fearfull of the PS3, payind money for things like that. If bethesda agree with that, i will never buy a game from them, even if its another amazing title like fallout or elders scrolls. Console war should never afects player (in this case PS3 players) instead it should benefit them. I think PS3 is a superior console (blueray disk, dualshock 3 controler is the best, remote play is just amazing, playstation network free, crossXmedia bar…). Althou i should admit that xbox live is better that playstation network, but its only a matter of time before sony update the software to make it better (Playstation Home will prove it).

Things like this are bound to happen, and its really uncontrollable. It really is all preference to be honest, and I like longevity of gameplay. Also I simply prefer FPS on PC. The controls feel more intuitive to me. The real shame is that the new game lacks the depth featured in the old game. Without any added content, the new game has as many side quests as the first two towns in Fallout 2. I honestly would have been happy to sacrifice graphics for this addition content because I think most veteran Fallout fans can agree that is what made the old games so memorable. Hopefully the DLC will fill out the large, somewhat empty gameworld a little better.

Guys… trying to promote “fairness” in the video game market is all well and good, but I think you should realize that when you refuse to buy a game, the damage you’re doing to Bethesda is minimal, if it exists at all. They’re going to sell plenty of copies of Fallout 3, and they are certainly not going to assume that the copies they DON’T sell are due to their decision to keep downloadable content off the PS3. So you may be trying to make a point, but all you’re really doing is missing out on a great game.

Also, competition DOES benefit the consumer – but only if the companies are equally competitive. What Sony is showing here is that they don’t share Microsoft’s desire to have a large stake in the downloadable content market.

C’mon people lets get back to the point here, Fallout 3 is an awesome game no matter what system you are playing it on. Yeah it sucks for ps3 owners that you may miss out on some extra content who knows you might just get it anyways these exclusives never stay exclusive for long.
Anyways I personaly can’t wait for the new content in fact I have held off on completing the game so I can enjoy the new content Without having to start The game over. I know that sound stupid but that works better for me.
By the way Xbox 360 destroys the PS3! enjoy your over priced blue ray player and when Home comes out pray that it doesnt crash you playstaion when you download it.

I cant believe just how much xbox 360 is controling online content. Microsoft is shit scared of being over run by sony and the only way they can compete is by having their games just a little bit better with DLC.
Gates has so much money to throw around and thats how he competes. People who have owned a 360 are most likely die hard fans because they have owned it since it came out, and have not cared to try out the superior ps3 console. And aswell why else would Microsoft cut their console price in half, like seriously there is no way they can compete with the ps3. if they were both the same price i think the answer is clear which would sell more. And i mean its all about quality. look at the ps2 system, i have had that since it first came out and it still works perfect, whear as i went through 2 original xbox’s before the next gens came out. now with the new systems all of my friends who have bought 360′s each of them recieved a red ring. and i dont mean one or two friends. im talkin ALL OF THEM. and microsoft actaully makes a light indication on the 360 beacuase they knew the red ring would happen frequently. but im straying from my point. microsoft should just take their defeat and not buy out all the DLC, let both consoles share it and maybe you wont make ps3 owners hate you even more.
and you allready have halo thats the sole reason for buyin the 360 and your profit margin, so when it comes to the little things like dlc dont throw money around like you own the place.

Oh ya and captain X79 enjoy your underpriced single minded underpowerd welfare console that you cant play for 3 months cause you have to send it to texas cause tha piece of crap crashed, and now ps3′s dont look so bad cuz they never have problems thier twice as powerful can do twice as many things, come wireless and
    can install other operating systems.
Oh but thats right xboxs come with manuals you can read while you wait to get ur console back :D

I own a PS3 and I love it. I have also worked at GameStop and in the two years the PS3 has been out, I have seen 2 MAYBE 3 come back defective. In the three years the XBox 360 has been out, I have seen well over a hundred, with at least one to three coming in daily with problems. What wins between the two systems for me is exclusive games: PS3 with LittleBig Planet, Metal Gear and Killzone; 360 with Halo, Gears, Fable. I do not think Halo is a good game, Gears is amazing, but I can get the first one (and eventually the 2nd) on PC and I am not a Fable fan. For me, the PS3 exclusives do it for me. I am upset though with all the exclusive RPGs on the 360 (Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscvoery) I will admit, what Microsoft has done with XBox Live is amazing, but you also have to pay for it, which makes sense why it is better. The problem is, Microsoft should not be allowed to make DLC exclusive to their “two” consoles. I somehow feel like it’s almost a monopoly, but Microsoft is good at that ;)

On a sidenote, an overpriced Blu ray player is a very uneducated comment to make about the PS3 because for one, it’s a top of the line SONY Blu ray player AND a gaming console AND a web-browsing machine, so for a system that can do two unique things plus everything the 360 can, it should cost a little more ;) that’s the end of my rant. Hell, I might buy a 360 just for Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, and Lost Odyssey

Wow, so many people complaining bout the other console, i own both and i say 360 is much better, my ps3 sits and collects dust because i much prefer the exclusive games on 360, my 360 only broke once and ive had it since it came out, even then it only broke becuase i tripped over the PS3′s cable and the 360 got yanked off the shelf. my ps3 within the first 2 weeks had several different problems, first it wouldnt turn off, then it wouldnt ejects discs, then it wouldnt turn on, then it would turn on and start making a loud noise that it really shouldnt have been making, each time i got the console replaced and they were all faulty, and the blue ray player is over priced, quality that you pretty much cant see anyway is kinda useless, yeah a whole range of colours that arent on SD sounds cool but since our eyes cant actually see them anyway its really pointless, and shut up about the graphics, both are the same, its the games that decide the graphics not the consoles. ok im done ranting about that :P

The setup of the 360 is more user friendly when it comes to DLC on the ps3 its very small writing that u can barely read and you can only tell whats there if you recognise the pics when ur looking at a list of the content available, and to the guy who said exclusives never stay exclusive your wrong, most of the exclusives if not all that ive seen have stayed that way :P
