Spore has exceeded sales of 1 million in it’s first week, with created creatures topping an astounding 26.5 million! This number of high sales is despite the huge Spore DRM backlash and mass pirating that has gripped the Internet and blogosphere since the issue first arose.
The sales numbers include the PC, Mac and DS versions of the game. It has also been released for mobile platforms such as the iPhone and cell phones.
Spore in many ways has been it’s own worse victim. The game received fairly good reviews although many were disappointed in the game and expected more from it after a massive and epic amount of hype leading up to it’s release, that started when the game was first announced and continued with a massive EA marketing push. And then of course, there was the whole DRM issues which may have severely hampered sales, as it’s estimated that over 500,000 copies of Spore have been downloaded off various file-sharing sites, making it one of the most pirated games in history.
There is even now a class action lawsuit against EA in California alleging that EA broke laws in that state due to it’s DRM and the fact that the DRM installs itself on your computer and cannot be removed (unless you completely wipe the hard drive clean) and that EA does not reveal the exact details of the program to the consumer. This could have major ramifications for EA but time will tell.
