Now that Microsoft will close Ensemble Studios after Halo Wars is finished, word of a cancelled Halo MMO game has leaked out. It was one of three Halo prototype projects underway at the company starting in early 2006. Developers often split up their teams to make multiple proof of concept games for half a year to see which has the most promise. Sadly in this case by late 2007 the Halo MMO project was internally cancelled, reports Gamasutra.

Ensemble Studios’ Bruce Shelley mentioned in a June 2008 blog post that the company “set up three prototype teams out of the staff of a major project that we cancelled. After six months of very interesting work, we have now stopped two of those prototypes, with one getting more time to demonstrate the value of its concept.” Further confirming this leak of the by Microsoft cancelled project, are the above in-game screenshots taken from an Ensemble-linked artist’s portfolio.

Last year we found out Halo DS was cancelled and now this Halo MMO. Time to shed a tear Halo & World of Warcraft fans.
