Nintendo has announced a “new” DS Lite color: Metallic Silver for release on September 7th, 2008 at the standard price of $129.99.
The new color is just in time for the holiday season to keep those DS systems flying off the store shelves. Although the Metallic Silver color is new for DS Lites, it is in fact the same color that the original DS launched with way back in November of 2004.
This new color joins existing DS Lite colors that include: Polar White, Onyx (black), Coral Pink, Metallic Rose and the dual-colored consoles (where each half is colored differently) Crimson/Onyx (Red & Black) and Cobalt/Black (Blue & Black).
And as Nintendo did with their last color launch (Metallic Rose), Nintendo has tied a celebrity to the new color hue to help sell it to the growing base of female and casual gamers. Liv Tyler (who starred in the recent Incredible Hulk movie) will lend her likeness to a run of print ad campaigns that will feature her and the new Metallic Silver DS Lite.
The Nintendo DS is still as popular as ever, as the system consistently tops the NPD Group’s monthly hardware sales charts in the US. For the month of July, the four-year-old system sold nearly 610,000 units in the US alone.
