id Software’s co-founder and game programmer John Carmack said at the Quake Con 2008 keynote that there are currently no proper Quake sequels like Quake 5 in development, and instead focussed on id Software’s next game that’s closest to release, Rage.

As you may know, the last sequel in the Quake series were 2005′s Quake 4 (PC, Xbox 360) and Enemy Territory: Quake wars, released for the PC in 2007 and for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in May 2008. — Via GS

PS: If you need your Quake fix, you should know that the conference opened with executive producer Marty Stratton talking about Quake Live, the upcoming free, browser-based remake of Quake III Arena. The closed beta test is current being played by about 50,000 players, with a 1,000′s added every week. Soon, id is planning to open the beta completely.
