Mortal Kombat 9 will be the true Mature return to form

Mortal Kombat 9 will return the series to it’s M-rated, blood-and-guts roots. This according to series creator Ed Boon in an interview with Kotaku at Comic-Con 2008.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, given the fact that Mortal Kombat 8 was promised to be a darker, grittier title than any before it (as well as being a total revamp of the series), before it was re-worked into it’s current form as Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.

This left a lot of fans disappointed (despite the fact that the game isn’t even out yet) and this is not a fact that has fallen on deaf ears for Ed Boon. Although there is little more than concept art for MK9, the grittier, darker version of MK is indeed in the works technology-wise and will strive for more blood, more violence and more of everything MK fans expect from the franchise (something that is limited to a degree by the DC license).

Sadly, the future of MK9 may very well depend on how well Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe sells. So here’s to hoping that all MK fans go out and support the franchise despite what they may think of the new twist (personally, I love it).

Update: It was revealed in April 2009, that with Midway going bankrupt, Midway’s team of 50 Mortal Kombat developers are talking to several other publishers to form their own studio and jump ship after 17 years.

F*ck yea Im getting MK vs DC
and I hope 100% that they make this game with nothing but MK characters

I like DC but come on kids would want it because it has Batman and Superman

And I dont think that kids would like it if Batman got his arm ripped off by Goro

LOL XD

(Yea i know you can still do it in MK vs DC but still just making a point)

Honestly i dnt think ill like MK vs DC because of the fact that there will be know fatalities….but im sure itll be ok…

Actually Nate, the MK characters and DC villains DO have fatalities. While the superhero’s have “Brutalities”, such as Superman who pounds the opponent into the ground. Which, you may recall, was Sheeva’s Fatality.

So they are trying to get as close to fatalities as they can with the DC characters.

Yes Anna, technically MK vs DCU is “MK8″, so this article is referring to the next MK game, which would be “MK9″.

I actually wonder if they’d call the next one MK9, since they’ve done the whole subtitles bit since MK: Deadly Alliance . . . you’ll notice if you watch Ed Boon that he will often say what # the MK games are. Probably to help himself keep track. lol.

Personally I can’t wait for MK vs DCU. I haven’t been this excited for an MK since MK Trilogy, and that’s saying something!

That would be 10x better than MK vs DC in my opinion

The preview looks sweet and I don’t much mind them branching out, but for orthodox MK fans I think we are all going to take a pass on MK vs DC because its clearly a gimmick fan service game. I’ll wait for MK9, and pray Boon keeps his ear to the ground and doesn’t forget the roots when he ‘tears it all down’ cuz what on earth was with the single fataliy and no PIT in Deadly Alliance?

heres what I have been wondering… Why has there not been a Marvel vs. DC game yet? I mean, we all enjoyed other rival companies such as Capcom/SNK, Marvel/Capcom, hell, we even seen WCW and WWF merge. whats taking so long and whats so bad about seeing Batman vs. Spiderman or Superman vs Wolverine? Man of steel vs the man with the Adamantium Claws. and you know what they say about adamantium.
