PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.4 walkthrough videos. Release on July 2

The PS3 Firmware 2.4 update is scheduled for release on July 2nd. Since it’s hitting very soon, here are some videos giving you a look at all the enhancements that are coming courtesy of the extensive update, which includes the long awaited in-game XMB (Cross Media Bar) access and Trophy support!

This first video will walk you through in-game XMB access.

This second video will walk you through the Trophy system!

Super Stardust HD will be the first game to leverage the new Trophy system and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

It’s important to note that just because the Trophy system has been activated, that doesn’t mean that you will automatically be able to earn Trophies in the games you’ve played. You must download a Trophy patch that activates the feature. Though Sony has said that 70% of already released games are compatible with the Trophy system according to the July issue of Official PlayStation Magazine UK.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophy support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase your accomplishments and compete with friends.

Here’s a list of first-party Sony games that are also slated to offer Trophy support:

* BUZZ! Quiz TV
* LittleBigPlanet
* MotorStorm Pacific Rift
* NBA 09 - PS3
* PAIN
* PixelJunk Eden
* Resistance 2
* SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
* Warhawk

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled to 100.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner, in addition to a few other small enhancements.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd, reports Sony

UPDATE July 3rd: Here’s a statement on the absence of firmware update 2.4. To quote Sony: “We are aware of a number of consumers experiencing an issue with installing firmware 2.40 on PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to enabling the community and XMB access features delivered in the 2.40 update. In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”
