Blizzard’s VP of game design, Rob Pardo, was asked about the possibility of the developer creating the next Warcraft 4 real-time strategy (RTS) game in the popular series. While the MMORPG World of Warcraft has over 10 million subscribers, the franchise started out in the RTS genre, so will it be returning to its RTS roots? In an interview from last year he answered:
“Yeah, of course there’s a chance,” he confirmed. “The way that we develop things, each time a development team becomes available, because they’re done with creating the games that they’ve been doing, they have a lot of say over what their next game is. So what it would take is for one of our teams to decide that they want to make Warcraft RTS and of course, there’ll be some talk about doing that and I’m sure after StarCraft 2 ships, it will be one the ideas on the table for that team to do, but that’s pretty far off in the future and it would really be determined by a combination of the dev team and the company leadership.”
Mr. Pardo continued: “I think that one of the things that makes us ultimately successful as a company is that we’re more lead by our game-making decisions and not so much by business decisions, which is one of the reasons why this question used to be the StarCraft question. Back when we did StarCraft, we did Brood War, and everyone thought they were amazing games; they were successful and I used to get all these questions like, “Why are you doing another Warcraft RTS, shouldn’t you be doing StarCraft?” Well Warcraft was what the team wanted to make, they were burned out on the StarCraft universe, that was the game they wanted to make and as far as Warcraft goes, we love the universe – it’s an amazingly successful universe. If we want to go back and do it, maybe we will, maybe we won’t.”

He said that the team decides what they wanna do, and not business models. So what ever the team feels like they can do the most with, that’s what theyre going to do. Personally I dont think they can do a lot with a WC4. Their next project will be SC Ghost, and maybe this time theyll actaully do it.
this is a reply for Ap-L starcraft was a poor game it didnt make that much $$$ and wow has about 10million players in the us only europe hasnt ever seen the game.so if warcraft 5 will have about 10 million people will buy it it will probably cost 30$ and the cost of shiping to canada mexico and to the other states and if your not bill gates that would be a big a** pain in your wallet… dont you say?thats more than $300million its really worth it.
sorry i made an error on the forth line its warcraft 4 not 5
Ap-L your still a bi*** you fag
Starcraft is huge in asia, they have whole tv stations dedicated to gaming, and the biggest game is Starcraft. Filip, you have no clue what youre talking about.
There is alot they could do with a wc4 they need to resolve the story with arthas was he ever defeated or did he and the other races just do battle for ever. plus its understanable if the blizzard teams wanna do other things b4 a wc4 as long as there will be one sooner or later. blizzard should ask the consuemer what they want more to help them decide
wc4 will be a success to many and it counts on the gamers, if we help them sell more by telling friends it’ll be better
I’d love a warcraft 4 maaan
im also addicted to wc3 but it really needs a replacement. And if they are so succesfull, why dont they get another development team?
:D
filip, WoW has several Euro servers, and several in Asia as well. I believe that less than half of that 10 million WoW players are actually in the US.
Personally, I prefer W3 more than WoW. I would love to see the story continued. What happens to Arthus after he bonds with the Lich King? Does Saergares ever launch a successful invasion? What happens to the Naga after Illidan dies? What happens to the blood elves? Does Saergares fight Arthus? Does the Ogre-Orc Halfbreed (Forgot the name for it, as well as the character’s name) find a homeland? There are too many questions, and too little answers.
I cant wait till wc4! personally i mostly play dota on wc3, so the change won’t affect me as much as others. I sure hope blizzard remembers to put in a real good map editor like last time. It would be a shame if the custom map community died with a new release
