iPhone games announced: Super Monkey Ball, Enigmo, Cro-Mag Rally, Digital Legends 3D fantasy adventure

Steve Jobs presented Apple’s new App Store at the WorldWide Developers Conference 2008 Keynote Address (click link for the full video of the event). Part of the App Store will be iPhone games!

The first announced games were:
1. Sega’s Super Monkey Ball ($9.99). It contains 110 levels. The iPhone’s accelerometer is used to control the movement of the character. See how that works…

2. Pangea Software is porting two games to the iPhone. The first game is Enigmo ($9.99). It’s a physics-based game and makes advanced use of the touch controls as well as the CPU.
3. Pangea Software’s second game is Cro-Mag Rally ($9.99). It’s described as a “cave-man racing game.”

4. Digital Legends is bringing an unnamed 3D fantasy adventure game to the iPhone. It uses OpenGL and touch controls, and promises a better experience than other mobile gaming devices. Looks great for a port they’ve only worked on for two weeks.

While the 4th game will be ready by September 2008, the other 3 games are expected to launch together with the App Store in early July. — Don’t discount the iPhone as a viable gaming platform just because the first iPhone was expensive. Starting July 11th the newly announced iPhone 3G 8GB will sell in 22 countries for $199. Looks like multimedia-wise the PSP Slim & Lite (1GB packs also priced $199) has some competition.

  1. Personally I will stick to my PSP (partly because Australia has no iPhone yet) but I have great respect for the enginuity and interesting assortment of games for the iPhone. I like how it is easy to develop games and applications for as well. I think that developers really ought to consider this as a proper gaming device. Also works well for a bridging device for newer players.
