Unreal Tournament 4 on Unreal Engine 4 expectation picture
Looking forward to the next next-gen (8th console generation) Unreal Engine 4.0 is expected to be released with Unreal Tournament 4 to show off its prowess, as with every new Unreal Engine comes a showpiece, usually an Unreal game. An example of this happened before the release of Unreal Engine 3, when Epic Games’ own projects — Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 2007 (later renamed to Unreal Tournament 3) — were touted as the company’s showcase titles for the latest Unreal technology.

Back in August 2005, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein revealed that the creators of the Unreal games and technology have already begun work [two years before in 2003] on what will eventually become Unreal Engine 4.

Unreal Tournament 3 for PCEpic Games boss Tim Sweeney, who’s been working on the Unreal Engine 4 core system design as the technical director, said in March 2008: “There is a long life ahead for Unreal Engine 3. [Unreal Engine] Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft’s successor for the Xbox 360 [AKA Xbox 720], Sony’s successor for the PlayStation 3 [AKA PlayStation 4] – and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs [AKA Wii 2], then that also. PCs will follow after that.” Mark Rein later clarified that Tim Sweeney meant that Unreal Engine 4 was coming to PC, and that “When Tim Sweeney was talking about Unreal Engine 4 … he mentioned something along the lines of it being exclusively for the next generation of consoles… what he meant was, it won’t run on this generation of consoles.”

For those interested, Unreal Engine 4 development will fully start sometime in 2008. With the next generation of consoles not expected to launch until around 2011-2012, it’ll be a while before you’ll be fragging photo-realistic enemies in Unreal Tournament 4.

OK…You all just might agree with me here, at least I hope so. When UT3 came out in 2007 (PC), I was very dissappointed and pissed off. Why you might ask…well, the word “Tournament” means that there is something in the end for winning. I do not see none of this on UT3. No trophies what so ever. I do recall having one of these games back in 2003 I believe or one of the first 2 or three and one of them had trophies you gained as an accomplishment. I don’t get it! UT3 has no trophies! Just a bunch of maps to fight in or you go online and download more maps…that’s it! I hope the next Unreal Tournament has more than just maps. How freaking boring is that. At least give us something to look forward to when we play the game. I played every Unreal Tournament that came out and I always enjoyed playing them. I am starting to think I might just give up on UT. The games should be called Unreal and keep the word Tournament out if they are just going to have only maps to fight in. One map to the other. You finish one map, then you move on to the next map. That does not make any sense to me. Trophies…..we need trophies or some type of awards to back up the word “Tournament”. Don’t you all think so?

Oh yeah…I forgot to add something. I know they put a lot of hard work into making these games but wow, every 3 to 4 years. Come on guys, lets be a little quicker than that. A new game should be out at least no more than 2 years.

I agree with IITheMaNII….UT3 does suck and I am a huge fan of UT.

  • lol console noobs

Why is it that console kids want a game every 2 years even though nothing on the tech side will be improved mainly b/c there hardware is static.

[Mod edit: Namecalling removed, be nice.]

I hope you’re not refering to me. I am a grown adult and by the way, if you cannot say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. That makes you what you said others are!!! HAHAHA!!

just thought y’all should know: i have a NATURAL appreciation for the makers of the UT series. i’m a BIG fan n collector of the entire series. altho i don’t play the older games no more, UT3 hit my pocketbook pretty well. i was just too carried away by the new visuals that i didn’t give a hang about some stinkin ‘reward’ system…to expect some kinda reward for EVERYTHIN dubs ya as a worthless praise junky. the type that shouldn’t be playin at all. the reward should come from WITHIN, not from an outside source. if a game’s got the BEST visuals, that’s good enuff for me. n i’m usually pretty hard to please.

  • pc ftw

kurizon is right the whole point of the games is to have fun not for no prize system and any way they cant make good games in the space of 2 years its very difficult and would blow up in their face so WillyG if you have nothing mature and worth wile to say don’t say anything

The reason that games like UT99 and UT2K4 became so popular is because the gaming community was allowed to (and encouraged to) modify the game and add to it. We had a 99 server that had over 800 maps, mostly CTF! UT2K4 is still going mainly because of a diehard group of people playing VCTF and TAM. When UT3 came out, it was a DISASTER for people playing on PC’s becuase the game was optimized for consoles. The front end was aweful until they finally corrected it somewhat, but is was still not as intuitive as 99 or 2K4. If Epic wants to keep this franchise going, they have to make the PC version of the game similar to 99 or 2k4 with much improved graphics. UT3 didn’t work.

  • Unreal2011

I’ll be expecting UT4 to be announced something in the middle of summer 2011, and released Christmas 2012/Summer 2013.

Unreal tournament 2003 to 2004 had no graphic improvements. I would rather a new game every year and no new graphic improvements than a game after 3 years, graphic improvements and a crap game.
