New Super Mario Bros. 2, when will it arrive on DS? Before Super Mario 64 DS arrived in time for the Nintendo DS launch in November 2004, New Super Mario Bros. development was already started. Two years later — the month after the May 2006 release of New Super Mario Bros. — many interviews were given by its lead designer Takashi Tezuka.
As we reported back then Mr. Tezuka, who has worked on every major Mario platformer with creator Shigeru Miyamoto, wasn’t able to comment about a New Super Mario Bros. 2, except to say that he’d love to make any sequel into a 3D Mario on DS as he looked back on Super Mario 64.
A week later the developer dropped another hint of a New Super Mario Bros. sequel in a survey hosted on the Nintendo of America website that read: “Assuming a reasonable price, how likely are you to purchase a sequel to New Super Mario Bros. or ask for it as a gift?” [On a scale from 1 to 7 it could be indicated between "no purchase", "neutral opinion" and "will definitely purchase a sequel".]
Obviously sequels to Mario games are no surprise as long as they sell well. Luckily the game has many fans, by the end of 2007 New Super Mario Bros. sold over 13 million copies worldwide! By comparison worldwide sales of other fan favorites are: Super Mario Bros. 3 = 18 million, Super Mario Land 2 = 11 million, Super Mario World = 20 million, and Super Mario 64 nearly 12 million. Sounds pretty favorable for the chances of a sequel, especially since the “Super Mario” development team at Nintendo must’ve been busy on something the past two years.
Outside of the question if the sequel should be in 2D or 3D, what about new gameplay modes? Did you know that early versions of New Super Mario Bros. had a 2-player co-op mode during the main game? While the 2-player battle and 4-player mini-game modes remained in the final version, the co-op mode was removed. That sounds like a fun new feature for a sequel. What would you like to see added in New Super Mario Bros. 2?
cool
Yeh for sure. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for them to at least make three Super Mario Bros. games during the DS’es lifespan.
I know I’m crazy, but I haven’t really enjoyed any of the 3d Mario games, though I haven’t played Sunshine. I loved that New Super Mario Bros. made a brand new 2d sidescrolling platformer. I hope NSMB2 remains the 2d feel.
Frankly, I want more multiplayer options, original new minigames, and more power ups.
The new ones for galaxy are awesome, so this one should have some cool ones too. I loved the shell power up. Maybe the return of caps?
I would prefer it to keep into 2-D, but actually, a 3-D Mario on the DS? That would be epic.
Co-op would be a basic must for me. I would still get it, of cooourse, but co-op would be so much fun. Maybe four players, too!
Wari and Waluigi in the game would be cool. Maybe a bit better story too, spanning over the levels with cut scenes and such, instead of just being random levels with no reason to enter and kill the boss besides go forward and get the princess.
I’d LOVE for that 2-player co-op feature to be enabled, by linking 2 DSes wirelessly perhaps? Mario and Luigi, tackling the challenges of the game together! I’ve wanted that since the SNES days (and I’ve wanted it in Sonic games and Megaman X games as well).
I’d also like to see some classic power-ups from the retro days make a comeback. The raccoon leaf, frog suit.. something like that. And like someone else said, I’d love to see some new and unique power-ups as well. And more secret areas in-level to find!! More on the degree of Super Mario World so there are all kinds of little things to find, rather than the levels being pretty linear as they were in NSMB1.
Here’s praying they actually make the sequel! pleeeeeeease Nintendo! You don’t know how much the fans want it!
1) Some new power ups(One idea I had in my head would be a special armor that lets Mario transform into a car and back).
2) Wario playable(I know. It makes it sound less like Mario bros. But if Mario 64 can make Wario playable, then maybe this would also do the same)
3) The same storylines as the Paper Mario games(I enjoyed the story due to some of its comedy. I wouldn’t mind if there was more of it in the NSMB Sequel)
4) If its 3D, make it similar to Mario Galaxy(Minus getting stars. Nuff said)
i think that they should make it in 2d, if they made it in 3d it would suck not saying that mario 64 ds sucked but it just didnt work well with the control pad, they should just stick to 2d with new super mario bros
i dont really care about any new power ups but they should at least make it so that when you get a power up and you turn into fire mario for example when you get hit by something you should shrink all the way down to non-super mario like they did in the first super mario bros, that way it makes it a little harder
and they shouldnt add yoshi as a ridable character because then it takes away from the mario bros because if your good at the game the whole time you’ll be on a yoshi
i would love to see a new super mario bros. 2 game!
i’ve played new super mario bros. for a while now and i’ve been dying to see another. but if i could add more new stuff to the game, i would put more worlds in for sure! i would put in the power ups from super mario bros. 3 and some from super mario galaxy.
please make a sequel to nsmb!!!!
****************
this is something i would love to see
you know how in the battle you can steal the other player’s items?
it would be so great that if you summon a mushroom, the enemies can eat it and upgrade…
imagine, you hit the “?” block and a mushroom slides toward a piranta plant
it eats it and pushes off the ground and chases you!
or a green koopa snacks on a flower and starts shooting fireballs at you
or the goomba swallows a giant mushroom and tries to stomp YOU!!
i also think that the battle mode should involve more than 2 players (mario, luigi, wario, and waluigi at the very least)
and there should be more maps to choose from and they should be either larger or more complex
I hope there do make a New Super Mario Bros 2, I have completed New Super Mario Bros and I thought it was well ace. Me, my mum, my little sister and my big sister all love it and I do wish they’d be a second one.
SUPER MARIO RULES!!
