New details on Project Origin (F.E.A.R. sequel)

Although Project Origin is technically a follow-up to F.E.A.R., the game will not carry the F.E.A.R. franchise name due to a shift in publishers. The second heart-stopping shooter by developer Monolith (after F.E.A.R.) continues the spine-tingling supernatural suspense story of an escalating paranormal crisis that threatens to destroy a major American city. At the center of the calamity is the mysterious Alma, whose rage against those who wronged her triggered a chain of events that has spiraled completely out of control. Now that she has been loosed upon the world, the consequences will be unimaginable. Project Origin will be released by Warner Bros. Interactive on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October 2008.

In the first-person shooter you play as Michael Beckett, a Delta Force soldier dispatched as part of a team to secure none other than Genevieve Aristide from the Armacham headquarters. You arrive there shortly before the explosive conclusion of the events in F.E.A.R. and in fact witness the detonation of the reactor from high up in the skyscraper housing their offices in a dramatic sensory overloading moment. From that point on, your team heads into the city tasked with getting to ground zero to determine what happened. More details are promised in the July issue of EGM.

On the Monolith blog the FX Artist on Project Origin, Mark Wood, talks about creating “how the blood sprays out of AI bodies… and voila! Hyper-realistic blood that looks good up close and at distance. The first few iterations of these effects were ridiculously overdone; the submachine gun would obscure an AI behind a “blood fountain”. So I dialed it back a little bit, but left enough to keep the signature over the top Project Origin feel.” You can see this bloody effect in the screenshot above or some other special effects in the video below.

The assassin is back in the sequel to F.E.A.R.
