Devil May Cry 5 on Capcom’s mind. Devil May Cry 4 record sales of 2 million make plans all but certain

Devil May Cry 5 Xbox 360 fake boxartDevil May Cry 4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi said back at E3 2007 that he wanted to make Devil May Cry 5 if Capcom let him. This week Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto announced in a press release that Capcom’s fiscal year 2008 sales increased to over 83 billion Yen ($806 million), in part thanks to Devil May Cry 4′s record sales of over 2 million units worldwide since its early February 2008 release, making it the fastest selling Devil May Cry game so far and taking the entire series from 7 to 9 million sold*. It now seems all but certain Capcom wants a sequel with Mr. Tsujimoto closing off the PR by saying “We hope to continue meeting and exceeding the expectations of gamers with our dedication to developing solid titles for the best gaming platforms available.”

To quote Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi’s words from last year: “Continuing the storyline is always possible. However, we do work under a corporate system, so unless Capcom gives us the green light to go ahead and continue on with releasing Devil May Cry 5, 6, 11, whatnot. It’s totally up to them.

However, personally I would like to continue with Devil May Cry and create more and more games for this franchise. Devil May Cry 4 has turned out to be a very cool-looking stylish game for those that have a PS3 or a [Xbox] 360. If you don’t buy Devil May Cry 4 you would think ‘Why didn’t I buy it?’ There’s no worth of having a PS3 or [Xbox] 360 without Devil May Cry 4. That’s the kind of game it’s going to turn out to be.”

Maybe in the hack and slash, action game sequel they can explain the story behind the Devil Bringer!

* Devil May Cry series sales as of March 17, 2008:
Devil May Cry 1 sold 2.16 million
Devil May Cry 2 sold 1.7 million
Devil May Cry 3 sold 1.3 million
Devil May Cry 4 sales are at 2.3 million

Update May 2010: Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory has long been rumored to be working on a project in collaboration with Capcom. When Ninja Theory studio boss Tameem Antoniades was recently asked if the project was Devil May Cry 5, he said: “Well, there’s no way I’m gonna confirm or deny if we’ve got anything to do with it.” But it’s a good possibility with Capcom also recently announcing that any new IPs from them would be made in-house in Japan, with Western studios being brought in to do sequels.

Would make for a nice E3 2010 announcement mid-June, don’t you think?

ADD ALL POSSIBLE CHARACTERS THAT CAN BE PLAYABLE INCLUDING EVEN THE THOSE LITTLE SEEN ALL THE WAY FROM DMC1! DMC5 DMC5 DMC5!

  • Dante

WELL ITS BEEN SOME TIME SINCE DMC 4 AND NOW CAPCOM IT’S TIME.

  • Sceptic Man!

…. No I don’t think we should have twenty different playable characters. The game is just going to become more off-topic than it already became in DMC4. The Story in DMC4 was HARDLY connected to Sparda at all, except that he is a “God” as usual. Mainly it was about:

    Nero: “KYRIEEEEE!!!!”
    Kyrie: “…”

I mean, COME ON! You hardly ever hear Kyrie say anything, she was like a freakin doll just hanging around just to have something to save. This game was awesome though, of course the stylish battle system never stops surprising, but the storyline was lame. “A shining knight rescuing the princess” is boring. Honestly I think Nero was unnecessary, there is no need for a new fresh newbie in the series, good’ol Dante can still kick ass. The series is about Sparda’s bloodline, his two sons or “Son” who stops the demons from entering the human realm all the time, but then Dante comes in for a split sec: “Oh what’s that? A newbie! He can stop the apocalypse!” The series is about Dante! Nero is acceptable but NEVER put him in the spotlight again!

    Cool. JQ

well, eventually they will run out of ideas, so branching out is somewhat of a necessity. How many times can you have the “demon about to bring darkness to the world, and only Dante can stop him” motif?

see, it gets cliche. Perhaps they could bring back Virgil? at the end of DMC3 it looked like he was about to battle the big baddie..maybe Virgil takes over as the big meanie and Dante has an inner conflict where he is torn between killing Virgil for good, or sparing his brother?

Perhaps Lady or Trish become playable. Lady in particular has a compelling story that could be fleshed out (ummm perhaps I should rephrase that!!)

  • Crowned Clown

sceptic man ur a freakin moron!!!!!!! Nero was completely worth it and should be a main character with dante in the next one

  • dikes

dude, nero may actually prove to be some kind of connection to virgil as many people speculate about his devil bringer

  • Jet wolf

Nero is awesome. A great character to play as and just as fun as Dante. Septic you said it yourself the game was great but Nero shouldn’t have been involved but you played as him more then Dante during the course of the game. Sparda isn’t the main character in this game dude, sorry to tell you. Nero was more of a main character in this game. Also, Kyrie talked too. In the begining she was singing, didn’t you notice. Anyways 2 million people enjoyed this game but you have to ruin it by saying “Nero is a noob, don’t introduce new guys just keep everything the same. It was fun but had a lame story line” Then don’t tell people it had a bad story line, because it didn’t have a bad story line. This game was great ignore, Septic’s comnent, he has no idea what he’s talking about.

DMC 4 is IMO the best in the series. The introduction of Nero into the series was a great change I’d like to see more of him. No hack and slash game has been as entertaining as Devil May Cry. Expanding the story more to explain Nero’s Devil Bringer would be good for a fifth game. The difficulty of the games although frustrating at times is what makes the games so much fun, my only real complaint is that they seem too short, for a $60 game I’d like to play through it the first time for a little more than 4 or 5 hours. But I guessin the long run replaying on all difficulties and the Bloody Palace makes up for it.
