Devil May Cry 5 on Capcom’s mind. Devil May Cry 4 record sales of 2 million make plans all but certain

Devil May Cry 5 Xbox 360 fake boxartDevil May Cry 4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi said back at E3 2007 that he wanted to make Devil May Cry 5 if Capcom let him. This week Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto announced in a press release that Capcom’s fiscal year 2008 sales increased to over 83 billion Yen ($806 million), in part thanks to Devil May Cry 4′s record sales of over 2 million units worldwide since its early February 2008 release, making it the fastest selling Devil May Cry game so far and taking the entire series from 7 to 9 million sold*. It now seems all but certain Capcom wants a sequel with Mr. Tsujimoto closing off the PR by saying “We hope to continue meeting and exceeding the expectations of gamers with our dedication to developing solid titles for the best gaming platforms available.”

To quote Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi’s words from last year: “Continuing the storyline is always possible. However, we do work under a corporate system, so unless Capcom gives us the green light to go ahead and continue on with releasing Devil May Cry 5, 6, 11, whatnot. It’s totally up to them.

However, personally I would like to continue with Devil May Cry and create more and more games for this franchise. Devil May Cry 4 has turned out to be a very cool-looking stylish game for those that have a PS3 or a [Xbox] 360. If you don’t buy Devil May Cry 4 you would think ‘Why didn’t I buy it?’ There’s no worth of having a PS3 or [Xbox] 360 without Devil May Cry 4. That’s the kind of game it’s going to turn out to be.”

Maybe in the hack and slash, action game sequel they can explain the story behind the Devil Bringer!

* Devil May Cry series sales as of March 17, 2008:
Devil May Cry 1 sold 2.16 million
Devil May Cry 2 sold 1.7 million
Devil May Cry 3 sold 1.3 million
Devil May Cry 4 sales are at 2.3 million

Update May 2010: Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory has long been rumored to be working on a project in collaboration with Capcom. When Ninja Theory studio boss Tameem Antoniades was recently asked if the project was Devil May Cry 5, he said: “Well, there’s no way I’m gonna confirm or deny if we’ve got anything to do with it.” But it’s a good possibility with Capcom also recently announcing that any new IPs from them would be made in-house in Japan, with Western studios being brought in to do sequels.

Would make for a nice E3 2010 announcement mid-June, don’t you think?

I agree with Jessieva, they should bring out Devil May Cry 5, but I don’t think that it should be rushed, I dunno If I want it going the way of Duke Nukem Forever or Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 in terms of devolpement time however. JQ

JQ, you are absolutely right. With this new
generation of Video Games, more time
must be spent developing the plot,
characters, & storyline. The fact that the
DMC Games have sold very well proves they
are getting better. This should be a
continued process, & with time, the sequels
will do better than the prequels, but only if
they keep their heads, & not let the sales
cloud their judgement on the next DMC
    Game.

OMG!!….2 million bucks!!! Damn!….He should continue making DMC!! That game rocks!….I’ll b his first buyers if God wills!

That’s right, 12 months devolpement does not make a decent game, 12 months is not long enough to improve on the graphics, depth, storyline etc… of a game, one exzample, the 360 has better graphics and a faster CPU then the first Xbox, so if a game’s sequel was releaced on the first Xbox it would not be as impressive but if it was releaced on the second it would. And also, Seventh Generation games are a lot better then Sixth Generation games, and therefore, take a lot longer to develop. But sometimes devolpers rush games to make extra cash, but really, can you blame them? That’s my opinion anyhow. JQ

I agree with JQ too. Nowdays, gameplay on latest comsole has been too short. In my opinion, Devil May Cry still has a long gameplay in the 4th installment. I agree that developers should take their time in develope DMC more extensive. Take their time to make the plot, and if necessary new characters. Yeah, higher graphics have more time dedicaction to finish the game product, it’s ok for me at least, so it is worth to wait for a while.

  • DREAMKILLER

devil may cry 5 is going to be a sequel to devil may cry 2 and nero asembelss a team to bring dante back from hell , they open the gate and expect to see dante come out but instead SPARDA comes out , not many people no but sparda had a bad side to him his good side went to earth and his bad side went to hell when the gate were closed. and dante isnt a playable charachter although he makes a appearence .. ill say no more !

Ok, if DMC 5 does not become a reality that will be a shame. I’ve been playing DMC since the first game and even I think that 4 was amazing. The introduction of Nero was incredible. They need to take some more time and develop the game fully like you guys have said, but keep going in the same direction they are going with 4. I think most will agree that if they do, 2.2 million will be just another record that is broken.

  • DREAMKILLER

DMC5 is gunna be a sequel to number 2

  • Tramendium

SEQUEL PLEASE I AM GETTING TIRED OF PREQUELS!!! dmc2 sequel would be the best solution and probably refreshing for the people

  • aleksandar

the BEST thing for DMC 5 and rest ,is beast to do like i DMC 2(i mean the enemies).because in DMC 4 the enemies are realy funny not a bit sceary or near,as they are in DMC 2.
i think it would be an EXPLOSIVE thing to do.
