PlayStation 4 planned 10 years ahead of release discusses Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai

In a recent interview Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai was asked about the PlayStation 4 and future Sony hardware always being planned / developed far ahead and how he feels about always thinking for what comes next despite Sony’s planned ten-year life cycle for the PlayStation 3. While it may seem obvious that if the PS3 sells well, there will be a PS4, it’s an interesting behind-the-scenes view.

Mr. Hirai answered: “Well I think in any given moment, you need to think both short-term - so, what are we doing next fiscal year, how do we grow the current business - but at the same time, you also need to look four or five years out as well. To say, OK, what is the consumer wanting to do in interactive entertainment five years from now, what can we as a platform holder propose, if you will, to the consumers, to say maybe we should so this or that, and make sure that we keep the consumers engaged, and really also make sure that we are leading the market as opposed to following it. So discussions are happening all the time, about both our short term plans - what are we doing this fiscal year, next fiscal year - as well as, what is the world going to look like, what is the landscape going to look like five years from now, or ten years from now.”

This last sentence would be referring to the PlayStation 4 planning. So the Kikizo interviewer asked what happens with the PlayStation brand in this rapidly progressing technology landscape.

Mr. Hirai answered: “I think so, I think so. But at the same time, I think we have proven with two consoles already that when you say it’s a ten-year lifecycle, it’s a ten-year lifecycle. And we have the luxury I think of being able to keep that long lifecycle going, which means that we don’t need to be talking about our next-generation platform, because again we have a very stable [current] platform. And we certainly don’t want to confuse the consumers once again, by talking about something that may or may not happen five years from now. And that’s something we’re talking about and discussing up here [taps his head] in the company, but it’s not something we talk about openly, again for fear of confusing the consumers. And quite honestly, I think the PlayStation 3, we’ve repositioned it, and it’s got quite a long way to go. I mean we’re just starting here.”

I’m glad there are professional interviewers out there. I’d be asking questions like whether or not the PS4 will have the Spider-Man font as well. I mean, aren’t you curious? :-P

Update March 27, 2009: Sony Computer Entertainment has filed a “PS Cloud” trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office. This occurred on the same day the OnLive cloud gaming service was announced, which streams videogames to your TV or PC for direct play without the need for high-end PCs or consoles. It’s unclear whether or not Sony have been working on a similar cloud gaming subscription service or if it’s simply to cover their bases in case cloud gaming is the next big thing. Sony describes the PlayStation Cloud as a provider of “entertainment services, namely, providing an online videogame that users may access through the internet”. Anyone care to guess if they are describing future PS3 or PS4 games streaming to your living room; or simply alternate reality (Xi came out on March 23, coincidence?) and arcade games in Home?

@AK-47 (GØD)
Even though the ps2 sold more units then any other system, it sill sucks. Any way the 360 in comparison to the ps2, rips it’s insides out, sets it on fire and treads on it, so does the ps3, even the Xbox 1 does, historicly the ps1 achived more then the ps2, the ps2 just sold loads of units. I respect Sony for makeing the ps1, it was a awsome console, but when the Xbox 1 came out, both the ps1 was out of the window, and so was any chance of buying a ps2, it was just so awsome, the boot up was awsome, so was the desighn of the console and the controlers were just so comfortable, but that’s just me, I accept the Xbox did’ent do as well as the ps2, but this gen the ps3 did’ent to as well as the 360, what goes around comes around, remember Sony stole the glory of Nintendo and Sega… JQ

well you also have to remember that it’s only 5 years in this gen and the ps3 been around for 3 1/2 years and it’s off to a slow start but the xbox had a year start of ps3. Also the rrod also helped to drive sales the reason why I say that most people that I know to have that problem they just bought another xbox. So that’s the only reason I see that the xbox is selling more then the ps3 at this time but what till the end or near the end of this gen to say who won but it’s just getting started.

@Yes
ps3 aint gonna make a comeback, the Sega Master System did’ent, the Sega Mega Drive did’ent, the Sega Saturn did’ent, the Sega Dreamcast did’ent, if you look back in video game history, consoles start of bad and end bad, ok dis me for only listing Sega consoles, how about the Atari 7800, TG-16 and N64? Bad start=Bad ending. JQ

So you can read the future now? History can change. I’m no Sony fanboy because I own just about all the major systems to come out in the last 25 years but this gen is going to last longer then last so it still can change.

And using sega as an example is a terrible reason to state your reason how the ps3 is behind in sales. Almost all of segas systems are rushed or not that great and sega is a failier anyway. Dreamcast though was the only great system sega had to bad it died.

@Yes
Ok, I think the Jaguar would be a better exzample then…
Anyway, even if this generation lasts 25 years, the 360 will still win. JQ

I sorry but it seems to me that you hate Sony and anything they do is wrong while Microsoft is some kind of saint. Am I right?

@Yes
If you’re talking post ps1 Sony, then yes you are right. JQ

I’m just asking what make Microsoft so great? What makes the 360 better then the ps3 in your opion besides the fact that the 360 sold more systems then the ps3?

@JQ

A few things. First off, Your little Ps1/Xbox at the top of the page. First point on this, You say that the 360 beats the Ps2. No dip Sherlock. That’s like saying the Wii beats the Gamecube. It’s two different generations. Comparing a Ps2 to a 360 is like comparing the shoes you got 5 years ago to your new ones. Second Point. The Xbox 1 is better than the Ps2. Im sorry..What??? The Ps2 Dominated the Xbox 1. Okay, the Xbox 1 had a cool boot up screen. Thats nice…? The design was a mammoth square brick. That’s neat…? Sure, the Xbox 1 had some good graphics for the time but the graphics didn’t save it (Ps3?) . Another thing to show the ps2 is far superior to the Xbox 1. The Xbox 1 is dead. But they’re STILL making Ps2 games, both Exclusives and Multiplatformers.

Second, I think it’s a little late in this race for Sony to come out. I think it’s still a race between Wii and Ps3 for the Middle Spot because Wii production is awful, but the 360 looks like It’s sailing smooth. Sony had a rough beginning any ways with the steep price tag, and the loss of nearly all the games that sold Ps2’s killed it.
