In a recent interview Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai was asked about the PlayStation 4 and future Sony hardware always being planned / developed far ahead and how he feels about always thinking for what comes next despite Sony’s planned ten-year life cycle for the PlayStation 3. While it may seem obvious that if the PS3 sells well, there will be a PS4, it’s an interesting behind-the-scenes view.

Mr. Hirai answered: “Well I think in any given moment, you need to think both short-term – so, what are we doing next fiscal year, how do we grow the current business – but at the same time, you also need to look four or five years out as well. To say, OK, what is the consumer wanting to do in interactive entertainment five years from now, what can we as a platform holder propose, if you will, to the consumers, to say maybe we should so this or that, and make sure that we keep the consumers engaged, and really also make sure that we are leading the market as opposed to following it. So discussions are happening all the time, about both our short term plans – what are we doing this fiscal year, next fiscal year – as well as, what is the world going to look like, what is the landscape going to look like five years from now, or ten years from now.”

This last sentence would be referring to the PlayStation 4 planning. So the Kikizo interviewer asked what happens with the PlayStation brand in this rapidly progressing technology landscape.

Mr. Hirai answered: “I think so, I think so. But at the same time, I think we have proven with two consoles already that when you say it’s a ten-year lifecycle, it’s a ten-year lifecycle. And we have the luxury I think of being able to keep that long lifecycle going, which means that we don’t need to be talking about our next-generation platform, because again we have a very stable [current] platform. And we certainly don’t want to confuse the consumers once again, by talking about something that may or may not happen five years from now. And that’s something we’re talking about and discussing up here [taps his head] in the company, but it’s not something we talk about openly, again for fear of confusing the consumers. And quite honestly, I think the PlayStation 3, we’ve repositioned it, and it’s got quite a long way to go. I mean we’re just starting here.”

I’m glad there are professional interviewers out there. I’d be asking questions like whether or not the PS4 will have the Spider-Man font as well. I mean, aren’t you curious? :-P

Update March 27, 2009: Sony Computer Entertainment has filed a “PS Cloud” trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office. This occurred on the same day the OnLive cloud gaming service was announced, which streams videogames to your TV or PC for direct play without the need for high-end PCs or consoles. It’s unclear whether or not Sony have been working on a similar cloud gaming subscription service or if it’s simply to cover their bases in case cloud gaming is the next big thing. Sony describes the PlayStation Cloud as a provider of “entertainment services, namely, providing an online videogame that users may access through the internet”. Anyone care to guess if they are describing future PS3 or PS4 games streaming to your living room; or simply alternate reality (Xi came out on March 23, coincidence?) and arcade games in Home?

    @Bubba
    Blu Ray will not improve, HD DVD did not, and like HD DVD, Blu Ray is the underdog, AND ALWAYS WILL BE!

  • Yes

    Fun fact hear mcjackqcool it wasn’t till a year or two ago that the DVD player out sold the VHS player and the fact that DVDs have been around for 15 years or so is very funny. HD DVDs were just an update of an already avalible technology; so is blu-ray but takes a giant step forward. I bet if it was 15 or 16 years ago and microsoft was in the system race and used laser disc and Sony used the DVD you would say, “laser disc is better then DVD.” and without any facts as to why it’s better.

  • mcjakeqcool

    Blu Ray is just a HD DVD with additional memory. Plus it’s being made by Sony, which are about as good as selling Blu Ray as 3do was at selling cds, until a console which will sell as many units as the ps1 which uses Blu Ray is releaced, Blu Ray will be another high end product turned faliure.

    Could be wrong my info is old so I dont really remember but Pioneer came out with a 500GB? Blu-Ray disc awhile back.

  • AK-47 (GØD)

    Yea see here it is. A 20-layer optical disc is now viable, following research by our team of engineers at Pioneer HQ, Tokyo. Each layer of the disc can store 25GB of information to provide a mammoth 500GB of storage. With its strong support among the gaming, movie and PC industries, Blu-ray has become the de facto next generation storage system. While Blu-ray discs (BD), offering both 25GB and 50GB, are sufficient for current demands, we see the need for a technology that can support far greater capacities as HD streaming in particular becomes commonplace and users build larger files of digital content.

    @AK-47 (GØD)
    Blu Ray is 25gb, not 250. Plus it’s expensive! Plus ps3 is a faliure! Rant up homies!

  • http://www.videogamesblogger.com Ferry

    They recently invented a new Blu-ray disc layer technique that allows them to put 32GB of data on 10 layers of each disc. That’s 320GB on one Blu-ray disc!

    Apparently when it becomes viable for mainstream in years to come, every commercial available Blu-ray player will be able to read those discs.

    You can read about it here:

    How are you gonna tell me that Blu-Ray is only 25GB. I pulled my last comment from an article. I didnt make it up. Yea the standard Blu-Ray for PS3 “now” is 25GB but no doubt, if game devs are smart, will start usin the 320 or 500GB Blu-Rays. Once that happens its curtains, hands down Sony will overcome all systems.

  • Yes

    Tell me mcjakeqcool what classifies the ps3 a failure? By you ideology I can say that the xbox360 is failure and not back it up like you; but I will the biggest reason the xbox360 is a failure is because it fails to be reliable and that is a fact. Poor first party support is also a fail for xbox360.

  • mcjakeqcool

    @Various
    Ok, 320gb blu ray disk, FALIURE! Oh, and the 3rd & to some exstent 1st party support for the 360 is streets ahead of the ps3. Plus the 360 has sold more units then ps3, even if it is starting to catch up, just wait for 360 slim to come out and watch 360 sales saur.
