In a recent interview Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai was asked about the PlayStation 4 and future Sony hardware always being planned / developed far ahead and how he feels about always thinking for what comes next despite Sony’s planned ten-year life cycle for the PlayStation 3. While it may seem obvious that if the PS3 sells well, there will be a PS4, it’s an interesting behind-the-scenes view.

Mr. Hirai answered: “Well I think in any given moment, you need to think both short-term – so, what are we doing next fiscal year, how do we grow the current business – but at the same time, you also need to look four or five years out as well. To say, OK, what is the consumer wanting to do in interactive entertainment five years from now, what can we as a platform holder propose, if you will, to the consumers, to say maybe we should so this or that, and make sure that we keep the consumers engaged, and really also make sure that we are leading the market as opposed to following it. So discussions are happening all the time, about both our short term plans – what are we doing this fiscal year, next fiscal year – as well as, what is the world going to look like, what is the landscape going to look like five years from now, or ten years from now.”

This last sentence would be referring to the PlayStation 4 planning. So the Kikizo interviewer asked what happens with the PlayStation brand in this rapidly progressing technology landscape.

Mr. Hirai answered: “I think so, I think so. But at the same time, I think we have proven with two consoles already that when you say it’s a ten-year lifecycle, it’s a ten-year lifecycle. And we have the luxury I think of being able to keep that long lifecycle going, which means that we don’t need to be talking about our next-generation platform, because again we have a very stable [current] platform. And we certainly don’t want to confuse the consumers once again, by talking about something that may or may not happen five years from now. And that’s something we’re talking about and discussing up here [taps his head] in the company, but it’s not something we talk about openly, again for fear of confusing the consumers. And quite honestly, I think the PlayStation 3, we’ve repositioned it, and it’s got quite a long way to go. I mean we’re just starting here.”

I’m glad there are professional interviewers out there. I’d be asking questions like whether or not the PS4 will have the Spider-Man font as well. I mean, aren’t you curious? :-P

Update March 27, 2009: Sony Computer Entertainment has filed a “PS Cloud” trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office. This occurred on the same day the OnLive cloud gaming service was announced, which streams videogames to your TV or PC for direct play without the need for high-end PCs or consoles. It’s unclear whether or not Sony have been working on a similar cloud gaming subscription service or if it’s simply to cover their bases in case cloud gaming is the next big thing. Sony describes the PlayStation Cloud as a provider of “entertainment services, namely, providing an online videogame that users may access through the internet”. Anyone care to guess if they are describing future PS3 or PS4 games streaming to your living room; or simply alternate reality (Xi came out on March 23, coincidence?) and arcade games in Home?

    Aint gonna happen, Microsoft is the richest company in the world. Fact! JQ

  • Yes

    Sure it will history tends to repeat its self. Just because Microsoft is the richest company in the world doesn’t mean that its all over and Sony will not be able to catch up.

  • JQ

    Microsoft will use there riches to destroy anything to do with ps3 and most likely Wii aswell. The only reason Dreamcast lost was because Sega had less money then Sony. Jeez! The Jaguar would have been a runaway sucsess if it had enough funding behind it. JQ

  • Yes

    No sega lost because they brought out system attachments and new systems evey couple of years and that’s how they lost money. When sega finaly got it right with the dreamcast 3rd party developers wanted nothing to do with sega and it’s dreamcast. That is how it really happened because without 3rd party support how can a system last? And microsoft ain’t a saint when it comes to their workers and products.

    @Yes
    Accuatly, the system attachments were a postive move for Sega. Oh, and MS are saints when it comes to their workers and products. It’s Sony who aint. Sony don’t deserve to win the console war, they’ve done less for the industry then my a**e. 360 beats ps3 by a long shot, the glory days are over for Sony! About time too. mcjakeqcool

    Really? Are you really that blind all microsoft cares about is money they sell deffective products and gets away with it. Microsoft just fired around 10% of its workforce awhile back and as far as I know sony has not downside sence the economy took a dump. Segas attachments may have been a positive move but had no support and failed. And how does the 360 beat the ps3 in every way? 360 has year head start on ps3 but by next year ps3 sales will equal that or more the the 360 because 360 doesn’t have any good exclucives.

    @Yes
    Deffective technology is better then dated technology, and that is EXZACTLY what the ps2 is. Everyone seems to have a go over Microsoft’s domience in PC sales, but WHAT ABOUT SONY’S IN CONSOLE SALES PRIOR TO THE PS3?! Xbox 1 was better then ps2 and should have won the last game race, period. Plus gamecube was no more powerful if not inferior to Dreamcast, yet nobody says the gamecube was a faliure, and no one goes on like the gamecube killed Nintendo, which it almost and should have done. The ironic thing is that the Wii is even worse then the gamecube and it’s top of the hardware charts, at least the Panasonic Q could play both gamecube games and DVDs, the Wii can’t even play CDs, pathetic. PS2 was ok but the Xbox 1 kicked it’s a*s in every was possible, come’on, ps2 could do 66 million polygons, Xbox 1 200 million, you gotta admit defeat there, lol! On this generation’s hand, 360 offers everything ps3 offers except blu-ray, is cheaper and has more games! And and the end of the day, Sony has hogged hardware sucsess since ’95 and Nintendo simply don’t deserve it. I think it’s time MS wins a console war, can you and I agree on that? JQ

  • mcjakeqcool

    I would say JQ is probally the overall winner with that arguement. Regardless, it was a good debate. Fair play to both JQ and Yes. mcjakeqcool

    Only thing the original xbox had over the PS2 was its availability to play in game music. Yea it was slightly better than PS2 only because MS said lets wait for PS2 to come out so we can make our system better. And in retaliation thats wut Sony did to the 360. There was nothing wrong with Gamecube other than the complete abomination for a controller. Twin Snakes played and looked as good as most games on PS2 and Xbox. Its jus has alot of childish games. Yea Wii is garbage. Im still baffled to why its on top. 360 has more games? Maybe true but how many of those game are worth a penny? Name em for me cause all I can think of is Halo and tht games is only worth a good 8 bucks.

  • mcjakeqcool

    @Yes
    Jeez! I thought this debate was finished. Also I can very happly state that between 99% and 100% of 360 games are worth a penny. Also if you think that the ps2 is better or even as good as the Xbox 1, then you are speaking out of you a*s. Sheesh! Is this debate over now?! mcjakeqcool
