Console sales update: Xbox 360 sales reach 19 million worldwide. Comparison to Wii and PS3
Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division results for its third quarter show that global sales of Xbox 360 have now surpassed the 19 million mark. This means a 74% increase compared to a year ago.
Microsoft said that it shipped 1.3 million consoles during the last three months compared to 500,000 in the same period in 2007. The company added that it had shipped 7.5 million consoles the past nine months. (Officially they said 7.5 million during the first nine months of the fiscal year, and 5.9 million a year ago, respectively.)
The official numbers of this 7th console generation:
Wii: 24.45 million sold as of March 31, 2008. [1]
Xbox 360: 19 million sold as of April 25, 2008. [2]
PlayStation 3: 13 million sold as of April 21, 2008. [3]
[1] The Wii sales number is almost one month behind the rest; Nintendo has stated they are currently producing 1.8 million Wiis each month in an attempt to meet high demand.
[2] In January, Microsoft reported it had sold 17 million consoles overall, a figure that hit 18 million a month later. So they are selling 1 million Xbox 360s monthly.
[3] EA Games predicts that 9.5 to 11.5 million PlayStation 3s will be sold in North America and Europe in 2008. So sales of Sony’s console are expected to go up to nearly 1 million a month as well, but at this moment seem to be half that.
