How to unlock all Mario Kart Wii secret characters. Cheats for bikes, karts and more (guide)

Take the following steps to unlock each of the 14 secret characters in Mario Kart Wii. Wii Mario Kart cheats are listed too.

Baby Daisy: Get a “One Star” rank or better in all 50cc Cups.
Baby Luigi: Unlock eight Expert Staff Ghost Data** in Time Trials mode.
Birdo: Play 16 different courses in Time Trials mode.
Bowser Jr.: Get a “One Star” rank or better in all 100cc Retro Cups.
Daisy: Win* the 150cc Special Cup.
Diddy Kong: Successfully complete all 50cc Cups.
Dry Bones: Win the 100cc Leaf Cup.
Dry Bowser: Get a “One Star” rank or better in all 150cc Wii Cups.
Funky Kong: Unlock four Expert Staff Ghost Data in Time Trials mode.
King Boo: Win the 50cc Star Cup
Mii (Outfit A): Win the 100cc Special Cup.
Mii (Outfit B): Unlock all 32 Expert Staff Ghost Data in Time Trials mode.
Rosalina: Get a “One Star” rank or better in all Mirror Mode Wii-Cups. Or if you have a saved game file from Super Mario Galaxy, you should win 50 Grand Prix races.
Toadette: Play on all 32 courses in Time Trials mode or win 1,000 Wi-Fi online matches.

* Winning a Cup means getting first place.

Successfully complete the indicated task to unlock the corresponding bikes:

* Bubble Bike (small): Win the Mirror Leaf Cup.
* Dolphin Dasher (medium): Win the Mirror Star Cup.
* Magikruiser (small): Play on eight different courses in Time Trials mode.
* Nitrocycle (medium): Get a “One Star” rank or better in all 100cc Wii Grand Prix Cups.
* Phantom (large): Win the Mirror Special Cup.
* Quacker (small): Win the 150cc Star Cup.
* Rapide (medium): Win the 100cc Lightning Cup.
* Torpedo (large): Unlock 12 Expert Staff Ghost Data in Time Trials mode.

* Dragonetti (large): Win the 150cc Lightning Cup.
* Glory (medium): Unlock 24 Expert Staff Ghost Data in Time Trials mode.
* Piranha Prowler (large): Win the 50cc Special Cup.
* Rally Romper (small): Unlock one Expert Staff Ghost Data in Time Trials mode.
* Royal Racer (medium): Win the 150cc Leaf Cup.
* Turbo Blooper (medium): Win the 50cc Leaf Cup.

Bonus Cups
Successfully complete the indicated task to unlock the corresponding Cup:

* Star Cup: Successfully complete the Flower Cup with a trophy. You must also get a trophy in the Mushroom Cup. Win both with at least a 3rd place.
* Special Cup: Successfully complete the Star Cup with a trophy. Win with at least a 3rd place.
* Leaf Cup: Successfully complete the Banana Cup with a trophy. You must also get a trophy in the Shell Cup. Win both with at least a 3rd place.
* Lightning Cup: Successfully complete the Leaf Cup with a trophy. Win with at least a 3rd place.

Mirror mode
Win all 150cc Cups to unlock Mirror mode.

Expert ghosts
Defeat a normal course ghost with a time at least seven seconds faster to unlock the expert ghost for that course.

Alternate title screen and ending sequence
Get a “One Star” rank or better in all Cups, including those in Mirror mode to unlock an alternate title screen and ending sequence.

Special credits
Win all trophies in a class to view the credits and see a congratulations screen featuring your Mii with Mario and Peach. Win all Grand Prix Cups to get another congratulations screen featuring your Mii with all the racers.

Quick start
When the countdown starts, wait until the “2″ begins to disappear, then hold 2 to get a boost at the start of the race.

Quick recovery
When you fall into an obstacle, press 2 precisely when you land to get a temporary boost.

Profile name stars
You can add a star next to your profile name on the results screen and the Wi-Fi races by completing all Grand Prix races with a certain rank:

* One star profile name: Earn a “One Star” rank in all Grand Prix races.
* Two star profile name: Earn a “Two Star” rank in all Grand Prix races.
* Three star profile name: Earn a “Three Star” rank in all Grand Prix races.

11. i unlocked Toadette by getting 1000 wins on wifi vs, NOT by playing all courses in time trial.

What I have been able to figure out, is 1000wins wifi doesn’t mean you have to win 1000 times, you have to place in front of 1000 users… so if you came in first in a 12 person race, you just “won” 11 times. I know this is true because my wife and I unlocked the one that requires 50 wins after about 7 races.

    Q8 (Hannah) & Q16 (Nonewcupp): You must also get a trophy in the Mushroom Cup.

    Q9 (EnvoyOfTheEnd): Yes, when it says ‘win’ above, it means getting first place.

    Q20 (Zach): To unlock expert staff ghosts (aka ‘fast ghosts’) you must beat a regular staff ghost by 7 seconds. Were you racing the staff ghost or just a regular player ghost?

36. everyone has there own theory on star ranking ive done 150cc placed first in 3 of the 4 races and the other one i came in 2nd and I still got a star ranking. It all depends on how many times you get hit by items and also not falling and hitting the wall helps as well.

    then another time i came in first in all 4 races and only ranked A, i got hit by 3 blue shells each race, not counting lightning, squids, slipping on own banana peels. stupid stuff like that lol

39. to 37-tate: Try to watch downloaled record replays of this trakcs. Using adequate character size and machine is helpfull too. Don’t panic, in Ghost Valley 2 you need less than 7 second (only about 3,5s I think And there is a cut in both tracks !

43. you are right, u don’t need 7 secs less than staff ghosts.. u need 7 seconds less in all ur records of that course..

    example - 2:05 the staff record.
    your records: 1- 2:00
    2- 2:03
    2:03 is 2 seconds lower, and 2:00 is 5 lower,
    in total they are 7 seconds lower… thats it
    the expert staff record must be unlocked

83. Retro cups are the 4 cups that are under the other ones, the ones with the courses taken from older games like N64 Mario circuit or GCN DK Moutain. You have alredy unlocken al retro cup courses if you have won all cups in 50, 100, 150 or mirror cups.

85. You get Rosalina by getting 1 star in all Mirror mode cups.I bet the world champions time for DK’s level, the game cube 1, by 5 seconds.You can cut across that gap if you jump across the right part, sort of like DK’s Snowboard Cross.

91. mirror mode is the 150cc but basically most of it backwards, as if you were now racing from the finish line back to the start still in 3 laps

92. oh and in yochi falls they always use the lower lever, they even go across the water on thir laps. LOl i tried that and fell off the cliff…so u may want to su your boots during that time, and you should *jump boost* that one haste on the bridge,

For Yoshi Falls start of and go across the first waterfall by drifting or just boosting across ( boosting is quicker), then cut straight across the turn and take the bridge.Then drift by the boost strip nip it to bet a boost and when you get to the water release the drift ( and pull a wheelie if on a bike). After the water drift over the boosts the release the drift on the straight-away (and pull a wheelie if on a bike) that is one way to do it and the easiest the explain.

116. Luigi shouden’t be a problem. Just ride all the courses with bowser bike ( heavy type). get a good start, use shortcuts. Drybowser and outfit B a really difficult to unlock. ( for me )

     You need to use manual drift mode, the B button starts the drift with a hop. That’ll get you over all those little islands.

     @ Janine,

     I can’t remember where it is on the course, but near one of the U-bend switchbacks, there is a shortcut across open space. You’ve gotta hit it just right or you’ll fall and I found that using a turbo shroom is a bad idea becase it will invariably cause you to shoot off the track on the other side!

     @ Everyone,

     The best bit of advice for the time trials is to watch the ghost replay. Doing so will reveal where those cheatin’ @$%&$! are taking their shortcuts. (Like the one in Ghost Valley) The ghosts sometimes won’t take the shortcuts every lap, so you have to keep your eyes on them for a full run usually.

132. I’m here to answer all your questions.
     1st thing on Ghost Valley 2 try a large character (Bowser) with the Off Roader.
     Drift around the start corner and get Super Mini Turbo boost(SMTB). When it comes to that short cut, take it by drifting sideways and pulling a trick. Don’t release the drift until after the corner.Then drift around the next turn until you get a mini boost then quickly drift into the next turn(using boosts here each lap is a good idea).Just before the finish line there is a boost and a jump. Try hitting the boost and missing the jump because that stuffs your time up by about 1-2 seconds.

135. That is odd, I’ve never herd of that happening before. Are you a here that there is different bikes/karts between the weight groups e.g the Rapid can only be used by mid-weights, the Off Roader can only be used by Heavy-weights and the Blue Falcon can only be used by light-weights.

142. bobodoleismydad, what parts do you need help with? That grumble Volcano short-cut must be done right and fast.You must get up there and complete 1 lap of it within 14 seconds and you have to take the right path.
     To get up there us a mid-weight and the rapid or maybe Nitro-cycle. Find the lump of dirt that you jump off,aim for the lowest part of the wall, boost close to it and pull a wheelie and need perfect timing for both wheelie and boost.

     Rosalina is unlocked by getting a star on every mirror cup gp or have Mario Galaxy

     Eric,have you gotten star ranks on all races yet? And done time trials yet? Here is a tip that helps getting stars,don’t wait at the back, your time in first means a lot. Another is avoid using/getting Bullet Bulls. This one is the hardest, come first one every lap of every race that you are in (GP 1 player) once again don’t use Bullet Bulls here ether.

     Viktor, yes you do have to beat the first ghost by a decent amount of time (about five seconds for most tracks). The original staff ghost times will get replaced on only the folders that you unlocked the expert ghost data on.

156. Star Ranks are just higher ranks then A,B,C,
     and you have to get gold cups to get them.But to get them you must race better and win everything. There are things that you have to do to get them e.g race with out getting/using a bullet bill. Coming first every lap will get you at least 2 star ranks. Also the time you spend in first counts so don’t stay behind to get good items at the start of each race.

     Normally if you finish about 5 seconds in front of cpu each race you will get star ranks also.
     Note: The times for the GPs are really stuffed up and are not always right. It gets annoying FAST.

188. yoyoman & Brazza: Apparently you need to get a “One Star” rank or better in all Mirror Mode Wii-Cups to unlock Rosalina if you don’t have a Super Mario Galaxy savefile on your Wii.

     Brazza: Retro cups are clearly shown on the cup select menu. Remember, you need to complete all the cups to unlock more cups to play if you’ve got a new game. As for the Mirror mode, that’s explained in the guide above.

     Joe, you have to race, and try to not get lower than third place. Stay in first as much as possible. That’s probably something they should have cleared up, but you figure it out.

     A helpful hint for ghost valley’s short cut is just before it start drifting the way you want to turn then pull a trick, after you land don’t release the drift until you are on the small straight after the turn. It can be done with all carts and bikes, but the bikes that drift differently, you must approch the jump on a different angle.

     On every lap of every race come first place,
     Don’t fall off the edge of tracks,
     Don’t get bullet bills,
     The longer you stay in first place the better,
     Getting hit by Blue shells and not losing a place,
     Avoiding blue shells by boosting away from them at the last second,
     Staying on track,
     Pulling tricks (note: in some places it is better to not pull a trick or do a jump)

250. It is a lot easyer in Manual because you can drift when you want to. Tik have you read the blog I posted before this one? Other things like the number of times you hit walls, Bananas, Fake Item Boxes and any other time you hit items lying on the ground count.
     Also the number of times you hit people with Items counts. They all help your over-all ranking at the end of GPs.

271. John, you can’t get rid of POWs but you can recover from them with out stopping. When the POW is almost on the 3rd drop use the trick button/motion and you wont stop or anything. You still will lose items and spin around but you should notice blue circle coming out from under your car/bike ,you wont slow down or anything though.

317. I just found a glitch that alows 2 people play as the same character. First have player 1 choose the character then hold B have P2 choose the same character then they push B P1 push B and go back 1 screen go back in to the same mode right away and both P1 & P2 markers will be on the same character and you both can choose them. Note when choosing a bike/car it will look glitchy but it is fine nothing to worry about.

320. This is the most best ever game. I only need Dry Bowser and Rosalina left. Oh and there is another shortcut on Koopa Cape. Once you go to the trees near (but I don’t know where), take a few mushrooms with you (Time Trial mode is best), then go through the trees and once you get near the red shell, just go through the grassy bit behind it. It will send you over straight across a grassy slow-point, causing the red shells to go the other way, but on N64 DK’s Jungle Parkway, it will go the shortcut near the finish line.

323. We just got this game for Christmas and are having tons of trouble unlocking new courses. We got first place in both mushroom and flower cup and nothing unlocked for us. We did it first with two of us playing in vs. mode and then a second time with just one of us playing in vs. mode. Do you have to do it as a GP or time trial or something? Does it matter whether you are in auto or manual drift? Does it matter for single or multiple players? I tried the turn the wii off and back on thing, and that didn’t do it either. 324. Yaah, you have to drive as single player in GP cups to unlock this stuff.
     Playing with more then one person just is for fun but doesn’t unlock anything. Or you do the time trial mode, as single player. But actually Im not that sure about the time trials. Cuz I got some of this stuff in beating downloaded ghosts via wi fi, so ghost from different players all over the world.
     About the Retro cups. Its not that difficult .. -.- xD if you enter 1 player GP 1oocc any player options (never matter which) then you can select your cup. There are 8 cups 4 nitro and 4 retro (nitro cups are the upper ones) so the 4 retro cups are easily those with the roads already existed in other Mario Karts. (Shell, Banana, Leaf, Lightning) .. dont understand whats so difficult bout that xD soo you just need to get gold and a (at least) one star rank in all of them in 1oocc to unlock Bowser Jr. I already got him (one of teh easier thing to unlock I think ^^)

334. I just had these same problems, 332 & 333. You have to do them in grand prix mode. If you do flower and mushroom and get a trophy in each, it will open star. If you do it in 50 cc grand prix, it will open that new course in 50 only. same for each of the other speed levels. when you do it in grand prix mode, it takes you through each of the 4 races in order, so you don’t have to worry about that. good luck!

352. Just a question. I was watching a race of Rosalina on Youtube and noticed she had a yellow star that floated and traveled above her while she raced. Can anyone tell me how one gets this, what purpose it serves, and if it’s available on all characters? Thanks!

353. No purpose it’s just apart of Rosalina’s character. It does make a sound when you get a boost and bounce around you but that’s about it.

354. cherries, if you unlock the star cup in 50cc, you will only be able to play it in 50cc. to play the star cup in 100cc, you have to win the mushroom and flower in 100cc. each race speed is separate for opening the new cups. in other words, you can’t open star cup in the slowest speed and then play it in the fastest speed. hope that helps.

     their EXPERT ghost staff not regular ones in order to get an expert one you have to beat the enemy by 8 or 7 seconds i cant remember…

     to get rosalina you can also have a saved data from super mario galaxies (look at my other post)

     Retro cups are the ones on the bottom row (shell, banana and two you unlock after that, which are leaf & lightening). They are called that b/c those are cups that existed in other versions of MarioKart before the Wii one.

     Wii cups are the ones on the top row that were created just for Wii.

     If the hint doesn’t say retro or Wii cups, then it is just referring to all of them. Hope that helps.

378. THERE’S A WAY TO CHEAT ON GRUMBLE VOLCANO!!! It’s very very very hard. You have to go to 1 player, then time trials and pick grumble volcano. you should start out with THREE red mushrooms. When the countdown of three is over, go back behind the finish line a little and use the three mushrooms to get on top of the rocks. circle around the rock three times, then get off and go to finish line. When you get there you have finished the race. It takes about 10 seconds. If you don’t understand go on youtube.com and watch the video of someone doing it.

478. You don’t need to beat every ghost by 7 seconds, they vary.

     The best tip I can offer is to challenge the worldwide champions’ time for each track.

     Watch the replay, pick the same character combination and vehicle, then try to follow them round the track.

     I unlocked the last 8 I was stuck on in a little over 20 attempts doing this, and picked up some nice shortcuts in the process.

     it is called the B-dasher mk2 (sprinter in NA)
     and it is based on an f1 car and it is a medium kart.
     to unlock the B-dasher mk2 you can:
     1. Unlock 24 expert staff ghosts in time trial.
     2.Win 3000 times on Wi-Fi.

560. Hey wonder if anyone can answer this…

     I was racing on wi-fi the other nite on rainbow road and the whole way through the race I was in 2nd place. The person in front of me was always in my view but they kept falling off. Thing is almost instantly they were back on my screen in front of me. Ususally because of the time it takes to get put back on the track you can overtake, but the gap between us was always the same???

     Really confused me. Is this some sort of recovery cheat? I know about the one for instant boosts etc but this is the first time I’ve seen this.

584. Brend: Time Trials is een race tegen de klok voor de snelste tijd. Als je goed genoeg wordt dan kan je het op gaan namen tegen een spookachtige rijder van mensen die het spel gemaakt hebben en dus heel goed zijn. Versla je die zogenaamde Staff Ghost rijder met een aantal seconde (zoals boven aangegeven) dan kan je nieuwe karakters ontgrendelen. Hopelijk heb ik het een beetje goed voor je uitgelegd, de rest van de informatie staat hierboven.

634. when in time trials, use the mushrooms mainly on things like grass or mud which is the best option. i did this and beat most of the ghosts !

     btw molly: beat all the other cpu’s in all the mirror cups and recieve a gold trophy as well as 1 star ranking which is located on the top right of the trophy screen. GOOD LUCK =D

637. for snes mario circuit 3 i would use toadette in the magikruiser and if you have internet watch the World Record (WR0, snes mario circuit 3 use a good drifting vehicle and go thru the dirt with your mushroom, daisy circuit use your mushroom to go up the stairs, if you have internet i would recommend watching the WRs

682. @ DJT-You have to unlock the expert ghost on 4 different tracks, then go back to the main menu and you should have him unlocked. I just got him about 5 minutes ago thanks to this site ^.^
