Grand Theft Auto 5 PS3 fake boxartThe latest edition of Gametrailers’ Bonus Round discussed Grand Theft Auto 4, its Xbox 360-exclusive expansions, and Grand Theft Auto 5′s release date. You can watch the episode below.

To quote investment banker Wedbush Morgan Securities’ game industry analysts Michael Pachter: “I actually think they already have a story in mind. GTA5 is already in the planning stage and my guess is you’ll see [the next GTA] in two and a half years. In fall of 2010, there’ll be Grand Theft Auto 5.”

Below we show you a timeline that leads to the expected release date of Fall 2012.

This video shows clues that point to GTA 5 taking place in San Andreas or France.

This Grand Theft Auto Bonus Round episode discusses whether or not the release of GTA 4 on April 29th, 2008, was the fall of GTA as a series. Or if Rockstar will reach new heights with it or future games.

January 2009 update: After rumors circulating on the internet, Rockstar confirmed that there would be no GTA5 in 2009. While most companies don’t respond to rumors, Rockstar probably thought it would damage sales of their two upcoming GTA4 downloadable episodes (the 1st in February, the 2nd in October), which they are still working on. As a result 2010 is looking more logical for GTA5.

September 2009 update: During GTA publisher Take-Two’s Q3 2009 earnings call, chairman Strauss Zelnick denied GTA5 by — ironically — talking about GTA5. To quote: “We’re not going to announce it. We’re not going to announce when we’re going to announce it. And we’re not going to announce the strategy about announcing it or about when we’re going to announce it either, or about the announcement strategy surrounding the announcement of the strategy. Any other questions?”

Piper Jaffray’s Anthony Gikas weighs in on the release date and thinks GTA5 will be out sometime between November 2010 – October 2011. To quote: “Our confidence in the company’s profitability profile is improving as product flow for FY 2010 is greatly improved and Grand Theft Auto V is expected in FY ‘11.”

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter claimed: “While we still expect a GTA game in calendar 2010, it is not clear that the game will be released before the end of Take-Two’s fiscal year ending October 31, 2010.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 location hintOctober 2009 update: On page 17 of Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City’s game manual, Rockstar gives a teaser where the next GTA game might be. Up until now it was most likely Grand Theft Auto V: Vice City. Which is a guess, because at the end of Grand Theft Auto IV, Niko’s plane ticket says “Vice City”. And this teaser image (scan shown below) — which also appears on a billboard near Star Junction, next to Liberty City’s Seagull — says “Liberty City, It’s Over! Next Stop. Theatre Seagull” with a hint we’ll find out more in March 2010. Meaning the new “Theatre Seagull” location could be opening up anywhere that has the mountains and beaches shown in that location depiction; Any place from England, France, San Andreas to Seattle and beyond. Where do you want to see the next GTA take place?

November 2009 update: GTA series producer/writer/voice artist Dan Houser had an interview with The Times London newspaper about the next GTA game. To quote the article: “There’s a Western game in the works for next spring, and the next GTA to think of. ‘We’ll think of a city first, then the characters,’ says Houser. The script he will end up co-writing will run to around 1,000 pages, nearly ten times as much as a feature film.

December 2010 update: Clearly a quick turnaround analysts promised us for the next GTA game didn’t happen. Instead a Fall 2011 release for GTA5 is much more likely. In the end, an extra year of development will make sure the game will be higher quality and more fun to play.

April 2011 update: The latest rumors see Grand Theft Auto 5 coming to Wii 2 alongside Xbox 360 and PS3 in fall 2012. Since that’s when the Wii 2 is said to launch, the story here being that GTA5 would be a launch game.

PS: Here’s a funny parody of Grand Theft Auto featuring some lost plumbers.

October 2011 update: Rockstar Games has officially confirmed Grand Theft Auto 5 on October 25th. They are promising us the first “Grand Theft Auto Five” trailer will be shown on rockstargames.com on November 2nd, 2011. :-D

Here’s the teaser image from their homepage confirming the game announcement!

Release Date Hint from Rockstar?: One of our readers Anders_L points out that in the trailer scene where the person is nailing a “For Sale” sign into the ground, if you look at the curbed number sign to your lower right, it says: “2405″ — a possible release date of 2012-24-05 or May 24th, 2012?

I agree I play gta IV all the time all you hear are 6 and 7 year olds playing they should make the purchasing laws more strict instead of asking for ID they should just ask do u have little kids in your household and do u have pictures if you do have minors just say no. I would also like for gta to be in san andreas vice city and liberty city all into one map also put more car dealerships like lambos and car modification shops ( ROCKSTAR CAN DO IT ITS JUST THAT THEY ARE TOO LAZY AND THEY CUT TOO MANY CORNERS)….. I LOVE LAMBORGHINIS.my xbox 360 gamertag is lamborghiniking

  • daniel

i just hope they remake the vice city and san andreas like they did liberty city it would be sick to have a huge map of LA

  • Dale

I think GTA 5 should be set in Seattle. It’s a large city, but less cliche than San Francisco or Chicago. Unlockable areas down the road could be Bellevue and Tacoma, both nearby and both decent in size as well. There are large airports, ports, freeways and all the fun trappings, combined with landmarks like the Tacoma Dome, Safeco field, Space Needle, etc.

  • david

i think seaatle is a great idea there is eferything for the making of a great game seattle has ports , two stadiums right next to each other the space needle columbia tower , and then tacoma is very near by tacoma dome narrows bridge and portland is close also maybe they could make a shorter version of interstate 5 connecting to portland , that would be a top seller

  • david

I have a better idea than just seattle , what if they made it the westcoast . it could have seattle , portland , los angeles and san diego I would say san francisco to but that would be a huge game , interstate 5 could connect them all through smaller areas of farmland and small cities like in san andreas , there could be more planes like stealth fighters and f-19′s , and making your character should be more advanced with faces ,race ,clothing ,everything also I would like to be able to buy a business like vice city , car lots clubs and stuff like that , maybe even own a baseball franchise like the mariners ,padres ,angels or dodgers .

It would be best if gta5 main character would have more modification to him.1 is to change his physique from normal, fat,or muscular.Different types of hair styles, different types of clothes like hip hop, casual, thug out,or that scarface look.Add tattoos and jewelry.More modification on the vehicals something similar to need for speed modification not exactly like it but having an idea of it.With body kits, rims, customized paint, graphics, and make a playlist of what type of music you want to play in your car.Learning different types of fighting moves and wear shades if you choose too.And if you really want to know the truth it would be best if took place in a city like los angelas, atlanta,or miami.Just think of gangstas, drug dealers, hip hop,mob figures, and big business men.I can go on but this is just an idea.

I think gta5 should have more limit to it than any of the other titles. make more realistic than ever before.Because you have a lot of people in this world that love grand theft auto.So make gta5 a game that would be played months and months after its release. One more thing if Rockstar reads this message my email is how u can reach me.And believe me I have a lot of ideas.PEACE!!!

  • bobby

please make gta have a lot bigger and cooler houses with more cars and dealerships. Make it a whole lot more realistic like be able to buy and talk to the car dealer. I love gta but there isn’t enough to it. The houses and cars really excite me but the houses aren’t big enough and there are only one type of lamborghini, no mustangs either. It would be awesome to have a HUGE city too. But mainly houses and cars. You guys rock keep coming out with more gtas. Later.

With GTA 5 comming up, I’m a lover of Grand Theft Auto games and an avid player, and I own all of them, I have alot of great ideas for GTA5, this time make like San Andreas again, I’m looking forward to 4 cities, yes 4 cities in one, the cities I’m looking forward to is, London, Chicago, Washington DC, Seattle, Detroit, Toranto, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Salt Lake City, Milwahkee, I don’t care which city as long as it in a diffrent city, I’m kinda board with Liberty City, and Vice City. And for weapons, have more and newer weapons in it, for instance, have a taser, mace, bowgun, stinger, pipe bomb, thats something new, and more malees like a 2 by 4s, crowbar, nun chucks, and the abillity to pick up anything and use as a weapon, to chairs, planks, tv, radios ect, even use you empty gun as a malee, and also bring back the FLAME THROWER! For wanted levels, this time have up to 10 wanted stars, lets have more cops come after you, lets have the US Marshals come after you, Secret Service, ATF, ICE, costums, DEA, border patrol, highway patrol, air force, DHS, state patrol, CIA, also have cops use tasers! And bring back the army! And have the ability to hold 2 guns in each hand like San Andreas, also this time you can shot the assult rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, and RPG in your car while driving, thats nver bin done. I hope you can fly air planes again, please bring back the planes, and you can distroy buildings and make craters on walls and roads, And for the main Character, I don’t mind if Niko comes back. Well that my Ideas for you, and I’m looking forward to it, can’t wait.

The perfect spot for GTA 5 would be the Twin Cities…Minneapolis-St.Paul. We have an airport, gangsters, great cultural diversity like GTA seems to have in all of its games. And…have you seen how many murders there are in the Twin Cities??? The game would be a lot more realistic in that aspect. They need to bring back the Mod Shops for cars. They also need to have downloadable content…and user created Mods. Airplanes would be nice…but it would be difficult to have realistic crashes with the presence of skyscrapers…they would need to have buildings actually collapse…which I highly doubt they will do in GTA at any time in the near future. REAL, POPULAR, GOOD, music is what they need…get rid of all the jamaican people too (NOT because of race, because of the accent that you cannot understand over the phone or even when they are just talking most of the time.) Character customization would be great also…in other words: race, more clothes, accesories, hair, physique, etc…And access to more buildings and being able to go into the stadiums and other unique buildings (I.E.: Statue of Liberty…from GTA 4, and unique buildings that should be in GTA 5…like maybe just random peoples houses.) And weird attire too…like football gear or “N.O.O.S.E.” gear or a police outfit…or an army outfit…i think you get the idea…but to sum it all up…GTA 4 is a great game…and GTA 5 can be so much better…with just little adjustments with random details.
