Is Eternal Darkness 2 Silicon Knights’ new pyschological thriller?

Could Silicon Knights’ next project be Eternal Darkness 2? The developer is starting work on an all-new “third-person action / psychological thriller” for all next-gen consoles.

The Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) has invested $1 million for two videogame prototypes from two Ontario developers, one of them being Silicon Knights. The other is Digital Extremes, maker of Dark Sector, which is prototyping a “third-person action game with an old-school horror theme.” The funding is meant for the developers to be able to showcase their new ideas and attract additional financing from publishers.

“By providing critical support at the prototyping stage, OMDC is helping Ontario game developers to retain a greater share of the intellectual property and to demand higher royalty payments — which help to grow the industry and keep jobs in the province,” says OMDC CEO Karen Thorne-Stone.

Silicon Knights’ project is expected to be completed in 2010 for all next-generation consoles (presumably Xbox 360, PS3 & Wii). Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see if this is the sequel to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, the GameCube psychological horror game, or something that’s completely new. — Via IGN

UPDATE May 13th 2008: At Microsoft’s Spring Showcase, Silicon Knights’ boss Denis Dyack again mentioned a sequel to Eternal Darkness is possible by saying “There is a chance; we love all the games we work on. We don’t want to be pigeon-holed [into a genre], we want to be known for strong content… There’s a strong chance we’ll return to it, but there’s no announcements yet.” — Via TVG

UPDATE August 17th 2009: At GameCom 2009, Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack was asked by IGN about a sequel to Eternal Darkness. He replied: “I get that question asked probably about once a week. You know we love Eternal Darkness. We’re big fans of it. I think the future is bright in that regard, but there’s no comments to make whatsoever.”
