Is Eternal Darkness 2 Silicon Knights’ new pyschological thriller?

Could Silicon Knights’ next project be Eternal Darkness 2? The developer is starting work on an all-new “third-person action / psychological thriller” for all next-gen consoles.

The Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) has invested $1 million for two videogame prototypes from two Ontario developers, one of them being Silicon Knights. The other is Digital Extremes, maker of Dark Sector, which is prototyping a “third-person action game with an old-school horror theme.” The funding is meant for the developers to be able to showcase their new ideas and attract additional financing from publishers.

“By providing critical support at the prototyping stage, OMDC is helping Ontario game developers to retain a greater share of the intellectual property and to demand higher royalty payments — which help to grow the industry and keep jobs in the province,” says OMDC CEO Karen Thorne-Stone.

Silicon Knights’ project is expected to be completed in 2010 for all next-generation consoles (presumably Xbox 360, PS3 & Wii). Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see if this is the sequel to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, the GameCube psychological horror game, or something that’s completely new. — Via IGN

UPDATE May 13th 2008: At Microsoft’s Spring Showcase, Silicon Knights’ boss Denis Dyack again mentioned a sequel to Eternal Darkness is possible by saying “There is a chance; we love all the games we work on. We don’t want to be pigeon-holed [into a genre], we want to be known for strong content… There’s a strong chance we’ll return to it, but there’s no announcements yet.” — Via TVG

UPDATE August 17th 2009: At GameCom 2009, Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack was asked by IGN about a sequel to Eternal Darkness. He replied: “I get that question asked probably about once a week. You know we love Eternal Darkness. We’re big fans of it. I think the future is bright in that regard, but there’s no comments to make whatsoever.”

Oh please God pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee let it be so. If it is, it will be a looooooooooooong wait till 2010.

Yeah I hope this turns out to be the sequel. Even if it’s a long wait, if it’s as good as the first game I think it’ll be totally worth it! By the way, Silicon Knights did plan Eternal Darkness as a trilogy.

OMG!!!!!!! please let it be so!!! i loved the first eternal darkness so much, that when I beat it, I couldn’t stop playing it! I played it again!!! and again!!! I love it!!! I can’t wait to play the second one!!! and for my XBOX 360! please! I would be the happiest girl ever!

I luved that game completed it 3 times and loved every second of it..I’m hoping they really do release a Eternal Darkness 2 or a Eternal Darkness spin off.

I do hope they make a second one, but if they do, it will only be on the Wii. Nintendo owns the patent to the “Sanity Meter” from that game (smart move.) And if they made it without the Sanity Meter, it would be like one third of the game would be missing. I personally hope they do make it for the Wii. That would be one good game for the Wii in a sea of muck…

Yeah it would be fn awesome if it was to turn out to be Eternal darkness 2. I played and beat the first one a lot.
