Sony announces U.S. Holiday sales: 1.2 million PS3, 1.3 million PS2, 1.4 million PSP
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced their PlayStation hardware retail sales reached more than 3.9 million units in North America during the holiday season (which runs from November 23rd, 2007 to December 31st, 2007).
During this holiday 2007 time frame:
* PS3 retail sales reached 1.2 million hardware units;
* PS2 retail sales reached 1.3 million hardware units, with Sony saying it’s poised for another great year in 2008 with the continued success of the critically-acclaimed Buzz and SingStar franchises;
* PSP retail sales reached 1.4 million hardware units, thanks to the success of new Daxter and Star Wars Battlefront pack-ins to the PSP Slim Entertainment Packs, with God of War: Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy: Crisis Core expected to further increase PSP momentum in 2008.
Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA, commented: “The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008. We are particularly pleased to have sold through 1.2 million units of PS3 during the holiday selling season. The strong PS3 sales also further establish Blu-ray’s dominant position as the high-definition medium of choice for games and movies. Consumers are clearly responding to the expanding multimedia capabilities and a great line-up of over 200 games.”
While in the U.S. the sales numbers from Nintendo and Microsoft aren’t in yet, in Japan the story seems to be a bit different with the Wii outselling the PS3 three to one. Nintendo sold 3.63 million Wii units in 2007, compared with PlayStation 3′s 1.21 million. The Xbox 360 is even further behind in the land of the rising sun with just 257,841 units sold.
