Jeff Gerstmann is still alive. GameSpot loses another veteran reviewer over journalistic ethics

Gamespots Kane and Lynch ads were quickly removed after the bad review
Jeff Gerstmann is Still Alive is the aptly titled blog of former GameSpot editor Jeff Gerstmann. I’m sure you remember the chaos that followed back in November 2007, after GameSpot fired editor Jeff Gerstmann because he didn’t score game reviews high enough.

Well now a GameSpot veteran freelancers quits because of Cnet’s poor management. Frank Provo is leaving after writing 751 reviews in over 7 years at GameSpot. To quote Provo’s blog: “I believe CNet management let Jeff go for all the wrong reasons. I believe CNet intends to soften the site’s tone and push for higher scores to make advertisers happy. I won’t lie to people and tell them a game is good when it isn’t. I won’t downplay negatives that readers have a right to know about.”

Good to see someone at GameSpot having principles and acting on them. Over at Neogaf he admits he doesn’t have a new job yet after quitting last month, but starts looking this week. He does make an interesting point that we might not have seen the last of the GameSpot staff leaving. To quote: “I don’t know what the staff’s plans are. I do know they’re feeling mighty isolated ever since management showed that it’s unwilling to take its employees’ and users’ concerns into account. It’s kind of like the first time a young child sees his dad punch his mom. Reality=shattered. I also know that San Francisco is one of the MOST EXPENSIVE cities to reside in. You don’t just quit willy-nilly unless you have the resources to do so. Or you live in a box (or Sam Bishop’s couch).”

This is the teaser trailer for “JFG: The Movie” (AKA “Kane, Lynch & Gerstmann : Dead Men”), which is based on last year’s controversial “Gerstmann-gate” scandal which started a media-frenzy on game journalism ethics. It’s extremely well put together and mixes scenes from JFK and Gerstmann perfectly.
