New Final Fantasy XIII video reveals new character and stylish combat. Extended Versus XIII trailer shows more kick-ass action

The sci-fi is back! After taking a hiatus from the last few Final Fantasy’s (IX, X, XI and XII) Final Fantasy looks to be going back into pure sci-fi territory ala Final Fantasy’s VII and VIII with Final Fantasy XIII (Lots of roman numerals, I know).

What’s the most significant change is that the main character looks to use guns as her main means of attack, which would be a first for a main character from a Final Fantasy game, who typically wield swords as their main weapon. It will also be the first core Final Fantasy (outside of X-2) to have a female as the lead (apparently anyway). Previously Final Fantasy XIII story details were revealed from an interview and the first Final Fantasy XIII trailer was shown at E3 2006. This new trailer seems to be an extension to that one.

It’s pretty impossible to tell exactly how the combat is going to work with this trailer, which is so beautiful that it looks like one big CG cut-scene full of stylish moves. A new character is also revealed at the end, although nothing about them is shown.

And in this extended Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer more of the Advent Children-style crazy action that Final Fantasy fans know and love is on display and absolutely gorgeous, as the character shown in the previous trailer fights and slaughters the group of soldiers before him. What is bewildering though is why the word “Cloud” is in the upper-right-hand corner, maybe that’s the name of the engine powering this game?
