GameStop getting into the tournament-hosting business

GameStop is one of the most popular “brick-and-mortar” video game shops (that is, a physical store you can walk in) for gamers and the chain has over 5,000 stores worldwide. And with it’s newest shop location in San Jose, California, the megaretailer will be leasing out extra space to accommodate it’s all-new “tournament center”.
GameStop stores have hosted tournaments before, but never have they had a whole section of the store strictly dedicated to hosting tournaments, that’s new and it’s part of GameStop’s upgraded strategy, being the first of the so-called “tournament-focused” stores.
On December 15th GameStop will be kicking off a new tournament for EA’s ultra-popular Madden NFL 08, which will be the first tournament to take advantage of the new “Tournament Center” in San Jose, California. The winner of the tourney will receive a $1,000 GameStop giftcard. Tournaments are set to run on “most weekends” with championship matches to be held quarterly.
In addition to being excellent spots to host tournaments, the new stores will also feature a 24 networked gaming station complete with plasma monitors to play on!
