Capcom has announced an all-new Bionic Commando game for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC (sorry Wii owners, no mention of a Wii title despite the fact that it not only has been requested in the past but it’d be a perfect fit given the gesture controls the Wii Remote offers).
Bionic Commando was a 2D action game released for the NES in 1998 (It received a Game Boy version in 1992 and a Game Boy Color follow-up in 1999). It’s innovation was a bionic arm that the main character used to swing from platform to platform. That replaced a jump button and made it unique among the traditional platformers that clogged the system at the time. The game was well received and critically acclaimed in the US, but much less so in Europe and Japan. As such, the game will be a collaboration of an American producer, a Japanese creative adviser, and the Stockholm, Sweden-based studio GRIN (who handled the PC conversions of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 & 2).
But now Capcom is set to revive the series for the next-generation. No gameplay footage has been shown for the game yet, but GameSpot got the world-exclusive reveal and an interview with the Capcom producer behind the title, who talks about how he’s been pushing Capcom to remake it for years and he goes into the game’s storyline and main character, how they created the main character, and what they had to do to update it from the 8-bit NES original.
The coolest aspect is definitely the return of the bionic arm, which has a really cool design to it and allows for not only attacking enemies and swinging through the air, but also gives you the ability to repel down surfaces and also and toss objects, like cars! If done correctly, this could be as good or better than the gravity gun.
