Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games for WiiSega Sammy, creator of the Sonic the Hedgehog, corporate director Masanao Maeda has said that: Sales of their new video game Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, that pits its flagship character Sonic against Nintendo’s Mario, will reach 4 million units after it goes on sale November 20th 2007 for Wii and DS.

He said this at the Tokyo Game Show last week. The forecast is equivalent to almost 20% of the games Sega Sammy sold last year. Big expectations to be sure. Video games accounted for about 23% of Sega Sammy’s sales, but only 2% of its operating profit in the year to March 31st, 2007. The Tokyo-based company was formed when pachinko slot-machine maker Sammy bought Sega in October, 2004.

Sonic’s 1991 debut for Sega sold 4 million units, establishing the blue hedgehog as a franchise, according to the company’s website. Nintendo introduced an Italian plumber called Mario in 1981 in the game Donkey Kong, later branching him out as the main figure in games including Super Mario Bros. — Quotes via Bloomberg
