Bangai-O Spirits DS screenshotJapanese developer Treasure has announced they are making Bangai-O DS. Treasure president Masato Maegawa has said that the game is pretty much all-new, so not just a remake of the Dreamcast and N64 game. The 2D free-scrolling shooter takes advantage of the stylus.

Bangai-O DS, called Bangai-O Spirits (Bangaioh Tamashii) in Japan, will include multi-cart multiplayer for up to four people. You can even play the main game in co-op with a friend! Also introduced is a Level Editor, which allows you to edit a map even while you’re playing. For example to bump up the difficulty by adding more enemies, which is said to lead to very funny situations.

The original game from 1999 is best known for having you collect pieces of fruit that let you build up your power meter and when it’s filled up completely, you can unleash a gigantic barrage of missiles on to your enemies (outside of firing your regular lasers). The more enemies are nearby the higher the missile count. Basically chaos causes more chaos, which is so awesome that I imported a Japanese N64 to be one of the 10,000 owners of Bangai-O on the console (well that and Sin & Punishment, which is coming to the PAL Wii Virtual Console this week). The price of the region-free DS game is an import-friendly 5,040 Yen (that’s $44 or €31) if this doesn’t make it overseas. In Japan it’ll see release sometime in 2007.
