LucasArts has announced Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is coming to the Nintendo Wii by Spring 2008 and it will include . . . Wii Remote Lightsaber gesture controls! As well as controlling your Force powers via Nunchuck (but lets face it, all anyone cares about is the Wii Remote Lightsabering).
This is a dream come true for many gamers who thought the Wii controller would be perfect for Lightsaber battles the moment they laid their eyes on it and witnessed the sword combat in games like Red Steel and The legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Contrary to popular belief and rampant speculation, the upcoming Wii Star Wars Lightsaber title is NOT a new game, but rather a Wii version of the aforementioned Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which has already been announced for the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, and Nintendo DS. Unlike the others though the Wii version will have an all-new exclusive “Duel” mode, where two players can face off in head-to-head battles using their Wii Remotes as if they were Lightsabers! I can’t wait to hear that distinctive hum coming from my Wiimote!
The Force Unleashed was first unveiled at E3 2006 where it’s cutting-edge graphical technology and physics made a lasting impression (they are powered by Pixelux’s Digital Molecular Matter and NaturalMotion’s Euphoria middleware). The Wii version of the game is being developed by Australia-based Krome Studios who are also working on the upcoming games Viva Pinata: Party Animals and The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night.
Like all versions of the game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed casts players as Darth Vader’s “Secret Apprentice” and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The game’s expansive story is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.
“The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console’s motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life,” said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. “We’ve worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force.”
